Installing a trailer brake controller
New owner to an 05 Tropi-Cal 396, 350 Cat, 50 k miles. I need to install a trailer brake controller on unit. Ant help would be appreciated. Plus I need to remove old sattelite dome, and add solar panels. Unit has air brakes and exhaust break. Not sure how to proceed.

Well for starters, rather than an electric brake system you keep it simple and could use an air powered one. M&G Engineering (my fav) and Air Force One are popular.

Welcome to iRV2 .
For flat towing a vehicle the air brake extension to the toad ( towed ) vehicle would be an excellent option . If you're going to tow a trailer then you need to know how to avoid interaction between the controller and the exhaust brake activated , brake lights on the coach ( assuming Freightliner chassis here ).

Hadn’t thought of that but that’s a good point. I often ponder defeating that feature. There’s pros and cons but for the most part I see it as a negative. On my ‘17 F250 the exhaust brake does not turn on the brake lights and for the most part I prefer it that way.
I also obviously wasn’t paying attention because he did say “trailer brake controller” and not toad brake controller.

I installed a brake controller in my trade winds, I had to run the blue wire from the controller to the back of the coach to the 7way plug. Brake light switch is under the coach in front of left tire. I installed a diode on the brake light wire so it doesn't backfeed when exhaust brake is on.

Wire no problem
69 Roadrunner, I have no problem but I’m not familiar with diode? Can you steer me to get one or send a photo. I’ve worked on all my work engines and have a basic understanding of wiring but unsure of diodes.

I’ve had both M&G and the Air Force One systems. The M&G on a gasser and the Air Force One on a diesel.
Now I’m in the unique position of modifying my diesel Air Force One system so that it works with my new gasser.
My current installer thinks Demco (the Air Force One) makes one of the best braking systems. However, he found a bunch of errors done by the original Air Force One installer. So much so that the system may never have worked.
Do your best to get a quality installer.

Use a roadmaster 790 hypower diode, wire near air brake light switch, cut in line of the coach brake light wire that energized when you step on the brakes. Wire feed to brake controller directly from switch before diode.hope that helps

Thanks so very muh
Thank you so very much, I know now how to do it. Doesn’t seem like that hard a project. Will do when my coach gets back from shop because refer coils were rotten. Being replaced with Amish made ones. Thanks again every one!
