From what I have read, the improved performance is offset
by poorer particulate air filtration.

The K&N filter usually requires cleaning and then applying oil to the filter to help trap particles. Problem is, the oil 'mist' can contaminate your MAF sensor and cause engine problems. The filters allow better air flow because they don't filter as well as the stock paper filter. My daughter installed one on her car, it did cause MAF problems when it was cleaned and oiled, following all directions carefully. I noticed it was also louder than the stock filter. We finally tossed it in the trash after the MAF sensor needed a third cleaning. No more MAF issues for another 40,000 miles and the car was sold.

Unless you have a performance/racing vehicle, most of these type additions will just cost money with no appreciable improvement in operation. You can get all types of reports on after-market items ranging from 'junk/waste of money' to 'it improved mpg by 15% and now can climb hills without downshifting.' It is your money....

Back in my TT days I put a K&N on my tow vehicle, which then became my TOWED when I upgraded to a class A.

I felt I got a slight performance boost.. Just about enough to notice.

As for the claims of poorer particulate filtration.. I have read those and seen the evidence from lab tests and the like. I still remain a bit.. er. skeptical as to how much of an issue it is.

My brother, in his spare time was a Dirt Biker.. he ran K&N on his bike as did many of his friends. They never found any evidence of particulate damage to the engines and they run 'em in very "Dusty" enviorments.

Still.. I use the Factory recommended filters on my 8.1.
