Microwave

Any Microwave repairmen / women out there ?
I'm having issues with my GE Profile microwave.
Model JVM 1190 BY.
I was using it as usual and heard a small " pop ".
Now the electrical smell is more overpowering than the food I was heating up.
Oh, and it no longer heats.
Question : I'm guessing magnetron. Has anyone repaired this model type ?
I have only glanced at removing it, thought I would inquire here while drinking coffee this morning.
Any tricks on removing it ?

Unfortunately, Microwave Ovens are in the group of appliances that usually bend the "cost effective curve" in favor of replacement with a new one. For starters, you will have to remove it, and take it to a repair shop, just to get an idea for costs of repair.

Give it up and replace it. It was not going to last forever. I replaced mine with a Samsung Micro / convection / broiler unit for under $500 at Home Depot.

Yep, Rook, I agree. After my coffee, I started to investigate. They are a disposable appliance. I need to count my blessings it lasted as long as it did.
Rick 2005, Nice job. The fitment looks good. I guess most are a standard size. That was my concern. Yours fits nicely front to back and butts good against your window valance.
I do appreciate the replies. Off to Home Depot again.

Here's the information on the unit in our '05 in the attached PDFs.

I had a lightening strike that zapped the microwave (along with the tube TVs and the inverter/charger). after looking at what it took to get to the mounting screws, I decided to replace the control board.

I got it in 2011 for $184 from Appliance Parts Pros.com Discount Appliance Parts – Since 1999 and from another supplier a big surge suppressor.

I didn't ask the important question first.

Do the LEDs on the control panel light up? Is the clock still working? What about the work light under the unit?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then it sounds like the cavetron (microwave generator) may have gone out. That's a replace rather than repair point.

BTW for parts just search for - GE Spacemaker Oven Household microwave/convection oven Model: JVM1490SH01 - and you should get several hits for places that sell parts.

Last suggestion (for now)

After the lightening strike, I put $8 single outlet surge superssors (Belkin) on the TVs and the Microwave.

I just replaced the one on the microwave due to a power surge (inside the coach) due to a couple of quick shore power bounces (power off then on then off then on). This situation causes a power spike INTERNAL to the MH which the surge suppressor for the microwave blocked as it was supposed to. $8 - cheap insurance.

JJH3rd, the clock, control panel, lights all still work. I would say either the transformer or mag. Either one are the most costly parts in the unit. I old thought of.... if I replace that, something else will probably go out in it. I subscribe to that thinking. It's time to upgrade.
Thank you for your information all the same.

Yes, I agree with your diagnosis. I hope the "installation instructions" are helpful in getting it off the wall and cabinet.

It could be as simple as spade connectors not making good contact. I have the same model, replaced spade connectors and wires for the oven thermistor (fuse), and replaced stepper motor. Burning smell was the wire insulation melting. Unlikely that it is the magnetron. Magnetron has a 10 year warranty from GE, they will ship you one free.

I have not taken it apart yet. I was using it on convection only. You have just inspired me to remove some screws to see what's happening in there !
Thank you !

Yes, they used crap quality spade terminals, this creates high resistance at the connection, which draws more current, and heats up the wire, melting the insulation.... hence the burning smell.
