New 2001 Surf Side 3311 DSO Owner on board

I'd like to introduce ourselves and to ask a question both.

My wife Margaret and I have been RV'ing for 20+ years. We just bought our second RV, a nicely kept 2001 Surf Side 31' with two slides. It sure feels roomy after our 26' travel trailer! We're looking forward to many more exploration trips in it.

Like many of you whose modifications I've read about, we already have some ideas to improve it to meet our needs. Most of them will have to wait to be done when we're sure they're well thought out and have the ime to make them. First thngs first - we want to take a few trips in it.

However one need to be done as soon as possible. After driving it 400 miles bringing it home I found I need to raise the driver's seat which is too low for me. My right knee gets stiff very quickly as it is now. Because the seat hits the slide wall as it is, it can't go any further back. So it's got to go higher. I've got a pretty good idea of how I want to raise it.

The question is if the nuts under the floor that the seat base bolts thread into are captured? Or will someone - thinner than I am - need to go underneath to hold them?

If this is mentioned in one of the posts and I overlooked it, I apologize.

The seat bolts have nuts on the underneath side, you can access the nuts over the front tires back in the wheel well area.

I had that same model for 6 years.

Thanks Richard - that's what I needed to know.

Do you have any other advice or cautions about my unit?

do you have Ford or Workhorse chassis. Make sure you have a good seal on the roof at the front and rear caps. National RV started using Eternabond tape over the sealant at those locations, it was a problem. That was there fix for many years then they started doing it on the assembly line I think in 2005 for all models.

Mine has the Ford Chassis and a rubber roof. It looks like the end caps are sealed with the soft non hardening putty-like sealant that has been used for years - the stuff that attracts and holds dirt like crazy.

If this is the problem installation could you explain a bit more about what it looks like and where to find details on the fix?

I believe in preventative maintenace to avoid future problems.

Tony

Just out of curiosity, I looked at my seat. It appears the seat is bolted to the pedestal on a 10x10 top plate. If yours is like mine, it may be easier to just remove the seat, put a spacer of the desired height in place, then re-bolt with longer seat bolts. Just a thought and something to look at when you get into it.

Thanks For the welcome folks.

John - putting the spacer under the seat is a good point. To be honest I haven't looked at the seat setup closely yet. We've been busy loading all the things we had from the trailer. It's remarkably like moving into a new house and trying to figure out where everything should go.
