First disconnect the house battery (battery disconnect switch) and chassis battery (extra switch or disconnect one of the cables (preferably the ground) from the starting battery (chassis). Next take pictures so that you can see where all the wires are connected to the starter so that you can correctly install the new one. Remove the starter motor.

When you go into the parts store (NAPA, O'Rilley, ect...) if nobody behind the counter has gray or white hair (what's left of it), leave and keep trying parts places until you do find someone who is chronologically gifted (see hair color or what's left). Hand him/her the starter and say "I want one just like this, except it needs to work."

If you have to take the heat shield off of the old one and put it on the new one, that's OK.

The reason I am spelling this out is that it has been my experience that I have never gotten the actual replacement starter by using the EIN, even the motor number to look up the replacement starter. I was only successful when I found a store where the parts person knew what was inside the box, not just blindly follow the database in the computer.

This should be a common item at most major parts stores. If not, this place sells them I think they might be a little expensive, but he is a big supporter of this forum. Plus, they can verify your starter by VIN. I have had good luck finding Workhorse parts at Napa is also a good place for shopping Workhorse parts. I know my local store is very good at finding me parts. Like JJH3rd said, the guy that owns the place is in his 60's and know is stuff! He has a three bay repair shop next to his store.

Good luck on finding your parts.

2445, I think the 8.1 is a Chevy V-8. Any auto parts store should carry it. Eddie Elk.
