Onan Generator click click click on start

Here's a good one for you. My generator won't start. When I hit the start button on the dash or on the Onan Marquis 5500, the solenoid will go click once and there is a very low and quiet lug lug lug coming from inside the genny.

I hunted on the interwebs and found that the solenoid is a very common culprit. I bought a new OE solenoid and I also replaced the cable end from the battery to the solenoid and the same issue.

I pulled the hot wire off the solenoid and hit it directly to the output lug on the solenoid and the starter motor engaged perfectly. Reconnected all. 13.5V on the hot solenoid lug. Hit the start button and 13.5V on the output lug of the solenoid.

What am I missing here????

Thanks

Zoli

I have bought new solenoids that were faulty right out of the box. Return it to the store and ask them to test it for proper operation.
