roof a/c recharge or replace a/c units

my question is I have 1999 national seaview 8310 model with two dometic
rooftop a/c units. the rear bedroom still blows pretty cool, but the front a/c
is blowing out warm air?

is it time to replace my rooftop a/c or just get them recharged? these units
original 1999 units, so they are almost 20 years old?

what is the average life of a rooftop a/c? maybe its time to replace?

what is the general consensus? thanks for any and all input,

If they need a recharge, they have a leak.

It's not like an auto system with seals and connectors between components. The rooftop units are soldered piping and a welded closed, compressor.

So unless you can find a leak and repair that, recharging it, which involves installing recharge valves, isn't going to last. It will leak out again.

I would say replace them, Your current ones most likely have R-12 and you will have a devil of a time finding that, the new ones have R-34 or some such... and now would be a good time to re-gasket & seal the units anyway... Just DO NOT ALLOW C/W to do any of the work... Buy them @C/W?.... mebbe... have them install??? NO WAY IN HADIES!

1998 National Tradewinds....replaced the front Dometic AC out of frustration, 2 years ago, later learned the real culprit....bad control board, found the trouble, cold solder joint. Rear AC still going strong... COLD. Rook

Are you sure the compressor is even running? It may not even be running. Go up and take the cover off of it then have some one start it up, and feel it, to see if the compressor is running. It may have a bad start or run capacitor, and those don't cost too much. If the compressor gets hot real quick and doesn't run look at the start capacitor circuit. Take the cover off the compressor and check to make sure there are no burned off wires, but be careful if you have it on there will be 120 volts in there. There will be 3 terminals in there, common, start, and run. Marked by C, S, R, there should be 120 volts from C,to S when you first turn the unit on. If there is power but it don't start, then it's time for a new unit. Another cheap thing it could be is the Klixon switch on the compressor, it will be on the common side of the circuit, right on the compressor. Seen many of those with bad contacts.
