Side Trim Advice

We have a '95 35' Dolphin. The laminated sidewalls terminate in a rubber"ish" side rail. Kind of like a rub rail. It was bonded to the ends of the plywood floor & protected from road spray by caulking. The PO let it fall out & water got, into the plywood & rotted the ends off. There is no way to reattach it. I was thinking about cutting it off, treating the rotted plywood, sister into in patches as needed, but am at a loss as what to replace it with. It's about 1 1/2" tall & 5/8" thick. Since I was a carpenter, I immediately thought about wood, but am unsure. I'm open to any suggestions anyone has. I'd like to keep the cost down as much as possible. Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Well, without any outside help, I've come up with the following plan: the side strip is backed with thin wood that has rotted & is inconsequential in the final repair. The trip strip & it's wood backing we're bonded to the frame & the rotting of the wood has broken the bond. I've decided to get a 3/4"X1/8" aluminum strip round the edges with a router, taper the ends, drill it every 6" or so & screw it to the frame. After this I can prime it & have the local body shop repaint the purple strip. I'll keep you up to date as we go along.

I'll try. I'm not sure how to post photos, but I'll take a shot at it.
