Tires

We bought our 2005 Sea Breeze in August, it has original tires which makes them almost 8 years old. What would you recommend as replacements and do you take your rig to a national chain tire store such as Good Year?

I have seen post with 6 year old to 10 years old. I have gone 8 years with lots of thread and lots of spider cracks. When I wanted a spare for our coach I shopped around lots and found Sam's club with best price.

Actually, it is likely your tires may be nine years old. Many motorhomes are on chassis purchased some time before the home part is built. You will just have to check the date code. Our tires are approaching seven years old. We have been having them inspected annually since age five. We will replace them this fall. Many owners replace at five years, some wait much longer. A lot of owners say they favor Michelin (FMCA supposedly has a decent national discount program with Michelin) or perhaps Goodyear, but other brands are mentioned as good, also. It seems to be a universal sentiment that tires made in China should be avoided like the plague.

Shop around. Sams and Costco are mentioned often as having good prices. We have found large variations in prices on tires and have found huge differences geographically. If you have a trip planned you may want to get prices from a few places en route to compare with local costs. In any case, prepare yourself for sticker shock. Good luck.

In my area I recommend Les Schwab tires.. Any truck or Rv tire dealer should know tires. As stated check the DOT date on the side.. I would not buy anything 6 months or older Look for 0612 in the DOT that's 6th month of 2012. I talked to a guy last week who bought tires five years ago, one just blew and tore up the side of his MH. they were three years old when he bought them as new tires.
my opinion is worth what you payed for it

Just bought 6 new Michelin XRV 235-80R22.5 for the MH. Ordered them through Costco, $395.99 + 8.75% tax and $1.75 Fed tax. It took 5 days for them to arrive. Costco won't install them any longer so I had them installed by a local tire shop for $35.00 each. They installed Magnum Beads in each tire for an additional $15.00 per tire. Took it on the freeway after and it drove nice and smooth. The old tires were 8 years old and had a lot of cracks in the sidewalls. Feel much safer now and poorer.

We just went through the Michelin Adavantage Program with FMCA. If you are an FMCA member this is an easy process. Prices are comparable to Costco etc. and they work through local dealers to install.

Here is the link for prices.

FYI: Our old tries were 7 years old and showed no signs of side wall cracking or uneven wear. I listed them on craiglist for $100 per tire and they sold in 3 days. The guy who bought them takes them and resells them in Mexico. He did not even try to low ball me or care about the date code. Helped take the sting out of $3000 for the new tires.
