Transfer box buzzing loudly

I noticed today the transfer box buzzing rather loudly today on my National Dolphin 5355. Is this a sign of a looming problem I have never noticed noise from it before ? So far electric seems normal I am not running anything yet in the motorhome. I am just plugged into a 20 amp in the garage. I noticed a loud click to the surge protector yesterday when a car battery charger I was plugging in had a short in the cord. Could this have damaged something? No breaker blew. Not sure if this outlet was on the same line in the garage.

You probably didn't damage it, but the buzzing is one of the contactors or relays. Mine buzzed for about a year before it finally quit on us and would not transfer to shore power. The new one is pretty quiet.

I had to replace ours last month. I was surprised that the new one had a informational paper on which was essentially this statement "this device may make noises and those noises don't mean anything is wrong."

Disconnect all power, blow out with compressed air, spray with contact cleaner let dry then give it a try. You may need to clean the contacts with ultra fine sand paper.

I flipped the 50 amp main sw on and off rapidly, maybe 10 times. Quit buzzing, that was maybe 4 years ago. What can I say!!!

Mine was buzzing too this summer. I tightened all the electrical connections in it and the sound went away.

I just read an article about buzzing transfer switches yesterday. It said cleaning was usually the best fix.

Yes on all of the above re cleaning. Mine is quiet but every now and then it will start to buzz loud enough to hear from the outside. I just open the compartment and smack it with my hand, buzzing stops and I wont hear it for a few more months.

I shut all power down after reading your suggestions waited a few then fired generator. I couldn’t hear buzzing with the generator going if it’s possible with noise of gen. After a few minutes I switched back to shore power much quieter. I will do a cleaning of contacts though to prevent any further problems. Thank you for the information. This came at a time pressured time as we are leaving for Florida in the morning. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all !
