Transmission question

I have a 2000 National Tradewinds 7373 with the 330 Cat and Allison trans. When I turn the Jake brake on, it slows the vehicle down, and when it gets down to a slower speed the trans downshifts to a lower gear. When it does that, it downshifts very abruptly. Our GMC pickup has an Allison trans also, and when it is in "tow mode" it downshifts really easily. The computer revs the motor up and the trans downshifts smoothly. Are the hard downshifts in the motorhome with the Jake on normal, or should it be downshifting smoothly like my pickup?

Thanks,
Dave

I may not have the exact Allison transmission as you do but if it helps, when I use the exhaust brake, my Allison transmission down shifts smooth as can be as I slow. Nothing abrupt.

Are you saying that when you TURN ON the Jake brake it immediately begins slowing your vehicle and Allison downshifts? OR do you run with the jake brake switch on and when it ENGAGES it slows the MH down resulting in a hard downshift?

Either way it appears you have a problem. If first scenario you probably have a switch or computer problem. If second scenario you need to have the trans checked. If capable you should have trans diagnostics checked to see if anything is registering. THOUGHT, you may want to check trans fluid level, if low it could add to a hard shift.

I don't have same unit as yours but mine shifts very smoothly; many times I don't even feel it except for the increase in rpms and the slowing down.
