2016 40' QBH versus 2016 42' LH with tag axle

We are just finalizing our order for a 2016 40' QBH without a tag axle.

We have been waiting seven years to be in a position to buy a Tiffin Phaeton QBH and enjoy being part of the full-timer community for a long time (hopefully).

But...we just read some comments about the benefits of the 42' tag axle versus the 40' without tag.

We prefer the floor plan of the 40' QBH but now are worried that we might be short-changing the usability of the rig that we buy if we buy without a tag axle.

If advice would be very appreciated.

I don't think you are short changing the usability of the rig at all. The tag axel may have a bit better ride and handling but those are totally subjective. Test driving both will be the deciding factor on that.

The tag axel can carry a little more cargo weight - that is not subjective.

We have been full timing in a 36 footer for two years and love it.

Go test drive both and then decide.

Having gone from a 40' non tag to a 42' tag axle last year I can give you a little bit of info. Most 42' units have 3 air conditioners and a 10,000 generator. You can order these in a 40' and I believe and they make the unit much better in hot weather. Also the 10K generator is a single speed generator (does not change rpm with load), and you quickly forget it's even running. We have not noticed any more trouble parking our 42 than we did the 40'. There is more cargo carrying capacity (weight), but less basement storage in the 42', although it has a little more room inside. One thing on the Phaeton you can get the Aqua-hot system on the 42 which we really like. Had it on both 40 and 42 on our Allegro Busses. A few things to think about. Steve

Our 2016 Phaeton 40QBH has one rear axle, 3 ACs and a 10K generator.

How much more is the 42'? What kind of toad are you pulling? Sometimes being a few feet shorter can help in older camp grounds. I think your 40' unit will be great and 2 less tires to buy. Dave

We traded our '14 Phaeton 40QBH for our Bus only because we were in the position to do so. I loved the Phaeton, and would not have any regrets if that ended up being our last motorhome. As already mentioned, the 3 ACs/10k generator were optional on the 40QBH when we bought ours, but I never saw one that didn't have it. One thing that will be different is the 40 models come with the 380 HP ISL, and the 42 will have the 450 HP ISL.

We traded in the 40QBH for the 42LA and we did it for the Tag axle, the 450 engine, the 2 stage engine brake! The floor plan is just like the QBH and if you get all electric, we found the basement area is the same! Also bigger living area is a real plus!
