2018 Tiffin 32sa generator problems
Hello all,
I posted this earlier but I can't find my post, so I will try posting here again.
I purchased a new 2018 32sa in July. I took the coach boon-docking the first week in August. I tried using he generator (7K Onan) to recharge the batteries due to having a residential refrigerator. The generator started but only ran for a short time before it died. I tried starting it again but it would not start. I waited for around 10 minutes and tried again. This time it started but only ran a short time and then stopped again (this time I could smell gasoline). I went out and looked at the generator and saw a small wet spot underneath the generator that smelled of fresh gas. We packed up and went home on the first day of our trip.
I took the coach to the dealership and dropped it off for repairs. The dealership had the coach for several days but was unable to find the problem. I had prior plans with the coach so I took it home and left the generator, so the dealership could fix it. We went camping for about a week and then came home. I called the dealership to set up a time to have the generator re-installed but I was told they had not found the problem yet. When they had the generator and the coach for the fist time they used 1/4 tank of fuel (20 gallons) trying to find the problem. The service tech told me they had ran the generator for several more hours but could not locate the issue. The service tech asked me to bring the coach back to them (at the end of Sept. or the first part of Oct.) to see if the coach is the problem. This is a brand new 170K plus coach. Should I be concerned that I got a lemon? Should I ask for a new generator? What would you do?

When you had the problem, did you have ample fuel? The genny won't run when about 1/4 tank or less. Thus to keep enough fuel for the propulsion engine.

If the genny works ok on the bench but not when in the coach, maybe a fuel delivery or other coach related issue.

This won't be the last time you will have a problem with the 7,000. I'm having to have mine dropped out to replace one of the spark plugs - no access panel. Also, had the garage that does my engine oil changes replace gen fuel filter and replace oil and oil filter - I ask them to start it after they did the work, but now it won't start. Probably too much oil. Be sure to use Onan oil and oil filters. Dave

Thanks for your response,
I had a little over a half a tank when the problem happened. I explained that to the service tech when I brought it in. I am hoping it is as easy as a short supply hose. John

I sure hope it doesn't turn out to be that way. I had a 5500 onan in my Winnebago that never gave me a problem for over 16 years. I like to do the services myself, but I might go to the dealer a time or two to see if there are any issues. John

I will contact Tiffin if the repair work does not fix the problem. I bought this brand (Tiffin) because I heard they were good about helping with issues. I sure hope they are. John

Here's a little trick if it happens again;

Sounds to me like your genny is running out of fuel. Possibly a kinked supply line or a bad fuel filter. I am not sure how fuel is supplied to the genny. Does it have a electrical fuel pump?
Don't be disappointed. Tiffin has the best support network in the business. No other company has a warranty program as good as Tiffin. ALL RVs have problems. Just read posts on other owner groups.

I bought this Tiffin coach because I have heard what you said, "Tiffin has the best support network in the business.". I hope to find Tiffin support service is the best in the industry. The coach has already had numerous problems with plumbing, the bathroom sink leaked, the kitchen sink leaked, the freshwater tank leaked (inside of the coach). there was fascia in the living room that was falling off, big chunks of plastic left inside the motor compartment after painting.
I have always bought used before (1 to 3 yrs old). Is this normal for a new RV to have this amount of issues. I would think that Tiffin has a quality control check team that looks at each RV before it leaves their plant Am I wrong?
