3M Coating Removal

Someone posted about removal of the old 3M coating, we have a 2003 Bus.
Per suggestions I began spraying with WD-40 a day ahead of attempted removal. The WD-40 softens the 3M coating.
It did not come off in a sheet, but in very small pieces, let the WD-40 soak in and get a pack of plastic razor blades.
Several people looked at me as if I was a bit loony when I asked for them, but found them at West Marine.
Luckily the coating was only on the very lower front of bus, it took most of a day to get it off.
Then 3M adhesive remover to get the glue off.
The nasty growth behind was upsetting the DW, so a lot of elbow grease and it is all gone.
I must admit, it does look a lot better now.

You would have made the job 50% easier had you purchased a good decal softener. Their are several on the market in hardware stores. WD40 is great for removing the glue residue. Plastic razor blades make it much easier as you said.

I can't believe that stuff is still on the market. Most removal damages paint and repaint needed, the same as if it was stone chipped over the same amount of time. Just sayin'

Are you talking about the "Diamond Coat" stuff? I need to remove mine and I am looking for the best way to do it.

2003 is before Diamond Coat from what I have been told, supposed to be a 3M product. That is what I have been told on the forums. It was checked and cracked badly and very nasty looking underneath. Glad to have it gone.

WD-40 for a day or two to soften the 3M, plastic razor blades and lots of WD-40 to remove it. 3M adhesive remover and plastic razor blades to remove the glue.
Good Luck and lots of Elbow Grease.

I don't know if you have access to one, but I was at one of my clients shop and an installer of "Clear Bras" was using an infrared light to remove the product off of a brand new McLaren due to bubbles under the surface. Mind you, it was only on for a day, but it pulled right off in one piece, fairly easily. Food for thought...
