Well for lack of a better alternative I rebuilt the computer. Fortunately the DC-DC power supply was fine but I replaced everything else. I installed a MSI H61M-P23 mother board (an almost direct replacement), intel Core 3 processor, 4 gigs ram and new sata HD & DVD plus Windows 7. One big plus is that CPU fan is much quieter than stock. Plus it boots super fast without all those little programs (craplets) running in the background. Total cost was $477.91 before tax, not cheap but the system works again and much better than before.

You did not choose to go with a sdd instead of a conventional?
Did you order online?

BCooke: I went to Comp USA for the parts. This way I was able to see the mother-boards to make certain the fit would work. Plus, I just wanted to get it done. I skipped on the SDD in order to save money that's the sole reason. Otherwise I would think a solid state drive would be superior particularly in a moving vehicle.
