AppleTV replacing Satellite or BluRay in Tiffin

Quick question for all: I am replacing the Satellite or BluRay (tBD which, just yet) with an AppleTV.

When I move the HDMI cable from either the Satellite or the BluRay over to the Apple TV, I get flashing on/off video every 1-2 seconds on one TV, and black screens on the other TVs.

Has anyone experienced this? It may have something to do with the type of HDMI signal “output” from the AppleTV vs. the Satellite or BluRay devices.

I use AppleTV all the time at my brick/mortar house, but they are all directly connected to each TV.

This is the first time I’ve experienced an HDMI to CAT6 splitter like Tiffin has run in their coaches. That’s why I think there’s a signal “type” difference between AppleTV and the Satellite/BluRay devices.

All thoughts welcome!

First I would suggest cycling (turn off then turn on) the HDMI switch while Apple TV is on. Might be a sync issue that cycling could resolve.

I have seen this also on my 2014 bus.

It maybe some kind of issue with the hdmi to cat 5 converters that are used to get the signal to all the tv’s.

I ended up attaching it directly to a tv. I know, that only gets you one tv. Buy a couple of them??

Your symptoms sound like a video signal incompatibility. Check the video settings on your TV. The resolution may be wrong for the Apple TV. I'm not familiar with Apple TV but there may be video output settings within it. Try reducing the output to 720i if there are.

We had the same problem with LG TVs on our '19 40IH. Resolved problem by setting TV resolution to 720p. Setting TV to 1080 causes problem. We had Tiffin technician investigate and first thing he did was change resolution, so they apparently know about the problem. It looks like the HDMI/Cat 6 hw is rated for 4k, so not sure what the incompatibility is.

We have a 2019 Open Road 34PA. I have used an HDMI adapter to stream from my iPhone and used the HDMI cable from the back of the Blueray player. TVs are all set to 1080 resolution and streaming has worked with no issues.

Lower resolution almost always resolves your issue.
However, you may have other handshake issues as well.

Thank you, everyone, for the ideas. I appreciate the help. I will work through some of the options and get back to you on what ends up working.

We had the same issue open our 2011 Phaeton. I just ran a direct HDMI cable to the TV and put the Apple TV in the cabinet with the satellite unit (to the right of the TV in our rig). Works fine, but only on that TV. I use the midship TV as a second monitor and not for TV anyway. I also installed direct HDMI cables in the bedroom and outside so I can hook up my phone or the Apple TV to those as well.

It’s not as elegant as having everything available with a single hookup, but it lets you watch different stuff on each TV at the same time. FWIW, I called Tiffin and they told me I had to derate the signal from the Apple TV to run it through the OEM system. I wanted full resolution, so I went the direct connection route.

hdmi input selector

Hi,
I installed Apple TV in our 2020 IH and was successful. I installed a HDMI input switch which allows the Apple TV to be in addition. I didn't change any resolutions and the signal is surprisingly good at all the tvs. also, the blu ray player is wired into your surround system so you want to keep that.

additionally, you may find updating the tv's software (all of them) may provide you with the Apple TV app built in or screen mirroring with an app on your device.

Ken

I installed an HDMI switch in our '19 Phaeton 40IH, to switch between a firestick and chromecast. I attached the switch to the HDMI that was tagged for satellite. Could not get any video in this configuration. Tried attaching the switch to the splitter box, with same results. Also tried to connect one firestick to "satellite" HDMI cable, and another firestick to the "DVD" HDMI cable. In this configuration, the firesticks went nuts and basically did not work. It was so erratic that we bought a Roku. In the end, we retired the Roku, and went back to single firestick. This configuration works well for us and satisfies our use case. Since I am a tinkerer, I will experiment further at some point.

What resolution output is your fire stick set to? You may need to adjust it to a lower resolution to work properly.
