Auto park brake. How does it work?

The wife and I recently purchased a 1994 Allegro Bus 34 footer on Oshkosh chassis with 5.9l and md3060 transmission.

I am now going through it to learn its systems and maintain/service everything to ensure a sound rig.

The rig has hydraulic brakes and a large yellow diamond shaped parking brake which I believe may be an auto park brake.

How does this brake work? What service, maintenance or adjustments must be made to make sure it is safe? We would hate for rig to roll way on us.

Thanks in advance for your information.

Welcome to iRV2.

Can you look at your coaches drive shaft and see if there is a brake drum on the transmission end.
Is your coach equipped with air suspension ? The park brake assembly diagram I have is for an air pressure applied drum brake on the drive shaft; so would require an air compressor on the coach.

If I remember this correctly, the Auto Park brake was used on Workhorse chassis and was a GMC product on their gas engine coaches. When you place the transmission in Park, the Parking Brake was automatically applied.

I don't believe your coach has one of these. The yellow diamond shaped button is, in fact, your emergency brake/park brake. When you stop, you need to put your transmission in neutral (unless it has a Park postiion) and apply the brake. If you have a Park position on your gear selector, your coach may apply the parking brake. The yellow button would be how you release the brake (just an educated guess).

My advice - call Tiffin Service and see if you can get one of the old timers. Also, take it to a parking lot and do some experimentation.

My GM gas glasser had the yellow button. The way it worked was an electric jack screw mounted on top of engine by firewall pulled a cable that applied the brake shoes on drive shaft parking brake drum.
I know this because when attempting to release parking brake it did not work. Had to pull the clevis pin that attached to the cable to get shoes to retract so could drive coach from RV park.
Almost couldn't get pin out, really high tension on jack screw. If you have to do this be very careful as the cable whips back.
Found out from dealer that this is a common problem with jack screw seizing up.
Your's may not be like this. But as you have no air system on coach the sw is electric.

Since FCCC bought Oshkosh, I suggest you contact them with your vin # and see if they can give you a definitive answer.

IF you determine you have a spring-applied, hydraulic pressure release AAPB it MAY be similar to the J71 AAPB that GM/Workhorse used on the P32 chassis. If so, you can read lots of threads on the J71 in the Workhorse forum, and get info about parts and free advice too. Good luck.

IMO, it is vital to your safety that you learn more about exactly what you have that is designed to keep you parked, when you expect to be.
