Awning mishaps while driving

I have been reading some horror stories about coach awnings becoming unsecured and unfurling while driving, sometimes doing lots of damage to the awning and the side of the coach. We have a Dometic powered awning. Are these inherently secure from this problem or should additional protection such as after market awning fasteners be considered?

I just had slide awning go on Country Coach Allure (1996). ZipDee shipped new awning material to a dealer where I was headed and they did the repair ($1,200) so I traded for a new Bay 35TSB and would like to know if anyone has experienced awning problems with the slide awnings as well as the electric patio awning.

No problems in over one year. The awnings have always done what was asked of them, no more, no less. They appear very bullet-proof to me.

Never had a problem with the powered patio awning, but a very strong side wind hitting the slide-out side of the coach sometimes will try to unfurl the front room slide awning. I always carry a small bungee cord that I can hook on the little handle that is attached to the front of the awning roll and wrap around the bracket putting additional tension on the awning. Only had to do this 2-3 times in 5 years and can usually tell about the wind before leaving the campground and getting out the ladder to do this. Maybe did have to pull over once on the Interstate and get out the ladder. Warning - If you do this be sure to attach a note to the dash to remove the bungee before extending the room.
