Code Reader

Is there a 6 or 9 pin connector to attach a OBD code reader onto my 2004 Tiffin Bus Freightliner with Cummins ISL. I cannot locate it. If someone knows if there is, please let me know where.

You should have 2 ports. One in the rear and one under the dash somewhere around the steering column. It will be round and may have a cover.

Not sure of your location, but after 1996, it is OBD-II and is a 16pin connector.

It should look like this:

Hi Ernie,

I did find a cable with what may be a connector. It was buried deep within the maze of wires in the dash. I actually thought it might be a buzzer of kind. Tomorrow I'll dig it out and remove the cover to examine more carefully. And I'll check the rear as well. As you said it is round and has a cover. I really appreciate your assistance on this.

I'm trying to track down the source of an oil pressure and a check engine light that remains on. When I first start it MH, the gauge pegs for a couple of minutes and then acts normally. However the warning lights stay on. The oil level if good. I am due for an oil and filter change in July.

Any ideas as to whats happening?

Thanks, Joe

I have an OBDII meter. I noticed today the there are adaptors which will allow the use of my existing meter on a nine pin connector. Hoping it works.

This is what I found

Went down to day check out to see if I could find what you've described. I snapped a photo. What is this?

Also you mentioned there's a 9 pin connection in the rear. Where?

Found it. The connector was accessible from the dash top access panel on the right.

Thanks so much.

Time out folks. OBD-II is not used on Freightliner, Spartan or Powerglide Chassis. The connectors used are J1939 complaint which is a totally different data protocol. In newer models, these are round connectors, in your vintage they might be more traditional shapes. If you have a ScanGauge-Diesel it should work OK, but a standard OBD-II ScanGauge will not.

Roger is correct. My J1939 compliant scanner will indeed work with the 9 pin DIN connector I was finally able to locate. Thanks for all of your help.

That is a picture of one of the alarms. You can close it off to where you can stand the noise it makes.

Thanks, I figured it was an alarm. The buzzer is right next to it so I wasn't sure.

Why would you need a code reader? My previous coach was a FL DP and in the chassis manual there is a way to flash the codes on your data screen. I can't recall the procedure but I know it can be done. Check the manual I hope this helps.

The OP has a 2004 coach and most likely a System3 computer. In other words, he has no MMDC or LBCU display.
