D/L UpGrade

For two years I have been operating out 37PA on a class C Driver's License issued by the state of Maryland. Recently during a conversation with some local Sheriff's Deputies I was informed that any vehicle weighing over 26,001 pounds required a non-commercial D/L. At first thought I decided to keep what I had and not upgrade but soon found out that if an accident occurred and I was not in compliance my insurance company could possibly not pay a claim. Now after going through the process now I can honestly say I feel more secure in the fact that if something happens accident wise of violation wise they can not get me on a technicality of having an inferior license. How many others out there are in the same boat?

That's a very wise move. The law is the same in Texas and I wanted to make sure I was legal in case of any situation like that and the DL process wasn't that difficult. It would be interesting to know how many are driving without the correct legal license either knowingly or unknowingly. A lot of RV sales people don't even know the law and steer new owners in the wrong direction.

This has been discussed on several occasions, here's a thread I started some time ago: http://www.irv2.com/forums/f103/cali...se-321796.html

LJowdy I missed your post probably I did not even give it a second thought at the time because I thought I was good because I had a 34TGA prior and the subject never came up. California appears to be by size and Maryland is by weight. Under 26,001pounds and your good on a C. When I looked at the Weight sticker and the GVWR was 31,000, I figured that was not good. Now to be in strict compliance with all states on the East coast that require auxiliary brakes on any thing over 3,000 pounds I ordered the RVI Brake system. Getting ready for retirement.

Texas Driver License for Allegro

Does anyone fully understand the Texas Driver License requirements for driving motorhomes. We are looking at buying an Allegro 36LA which has a GVWR of 24,000 lbs. We plan to flat tow a car that is approximately 4,000 lbs. The rules show:

Non-CDL Class A if:

"A combination of vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001 pounds or more provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds"

OR

Non-CDL Class B if:

"Single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,000 pounds or more that is towing a vehicle with a GVWR that does not exceed 10,000 pounds or a farm trailer with a GVWR that does not exceed 20,000 pounds"

Since the 36LA is less than 26,000 and the toad is 4,000 lbs does that mean we don't need a Non-CDL licence and can drive with our normal Class C?

Hopefully someone fully understands this for Texas.

whciv - you are good to go on your standard license. Your coach is less than 26,000 lbs and your towed vehicle is less than 10,000 lbs.
