Door problem

Hi all! My DW is traveling with friends in 2019 37BA. The door is jammed and won’t open! After a lot of work they got it to open, appears to be a dead bolt issue. Any thoughts? Should not be a problem!

Thx

Our deadbolt can be tough to close and open without pulling on the door handle. It may just need an adjustment. I don't mean to be flippant but I would tell her to use the other lock only and then take a look at the issue when they get home. I doubt it's a major issue but I tend to wait until I get back from a trip if I'm able to dig into anything, unless I have a lot of sitting around time.

Thanks, didn’t take it as being flippant. Problem was she was only using the lower lock, somehow the deadbolt prevented it from opening when it wasn’t being used, will take a closer look when she gets home. Thanks for the reply!

There have been some reported issues with the door locks, especially on the 2017-18 models. The tightness of the latch when closed is adjustable. Since you are new, I would contact Tiffin, report the problem and request a replacement door lock.

Tiffin switched to PTL doors in 2018. Been lots of complaints about them. Some had the door actually open while on the road. Mine did too. I had to put different sized bumpers on the screen door and also adjust the door handle and the inner works. You can get the manuals on line at PTL and find some You Tube stuff as well.

Ugg! We have been locked out once. Had to break window on 3 month old Phaeton. Now we leave a window unlocked just in case. Turned out to be the paddle style handle had to be replaced.
We also were locked in. Plate that covers the dead bolt popped a rivet making the deadbolt unable to slide. Had to disassemble the door handle from inside to free ourselves. Looks like the rivet issue may have been partly our fault. If you don’t make sure the dead bolt if retracted before opening the door it places stress on the plate and over time it will break the rivet holding the deadbolt in place. We also had the PTL door jam replaced with the adjustable one. This helped in the alignment of the door making it a little bit easier to close.
So far so good for now but we really are cautious opening and closing the door. I sure wish Tiffin would go to the stand alone deadbolt. Had one on each of our previous coaches an never had issues nor heard anyone else having any.

Just climbed out.......

...the one escape window. Frustrating...Don't think the dog will want to go in again. Once outside, I stood on a step ladder and slammed hard with my shoulder a couple of times. Door opened. I guess I have to slam it every time. My 2018 OR 36la does have an outstanding recall on this which I have an appointment for in a month. Any other suggestions?
TIA 4 the reply

We have a new 32SA and have been fighting a door issue ever since we got it. Dealership has already gone through an adjustment once, and it ended up worse than it was. Go to open the door, from the outside, and it keeps hanging up. When you close the door, you ghave to same it really hard to get it sealed. It's going back to the dealer, again. When I spoke with the service group, they suggested that I may want to take it back to Red Bay for repair as the door assembly may need to be replaced. My response wa, who's paying for the 6000 mile round trip to get a warranty item fixed? No answer. I'll give them another crack, and if they cant get it done, I have a private service center that will have a crack at it.

Since you are having to slam it hard to get it to lock there is one thing you can try. Remove the three rubber bumpers on the door with a screwdriver and close the door. If it closes easily without slamming, trim about 1/8" off the back side of the bumpers and reinstall them. If that's better but still hard, trim just a tiny bit more and try again. I had to remove about 3/16" off of ours to get it to close without slamming hard. You don't want to go too far or the screen door will rattle when you are moving. As for the hanging up, is your deadbolt retracting all the way? If it sticks out a little it can cause hanging.

got locked in AND OUT 3 times over 4 days....Really unacceptable.... Contacted Tiffin and they didn't bat an eye.....sending me whole door latch inside and out. The only concerning thing is that they are still using the PTL LOCKS!

We got our new door lock assembly recently, have not had a chance to install yet but will before we head out again in a few weeks. I truly believe there is an issue with the PTL door system on the2019 rigs even though Tiffin has not acknowledged it yet. I also agree, we live in New England, can’t always run down to Red Bay for a fix, that’s a lot of fuel!
