Engine codes?

So you get a icon, check engine, what do YOU DO.
If like most people, you likely check oil pressure, engine temp, fuel and def levels, coolant level, tighten fuel caps, spin your wife around clockwise
3 times and then drive 150 miles to a dealer, to wait 3 hours to hook up a code tester, then say, it could be one of these 11 things. Isn't it time for a better way.?

I refer to my Scangauge D, which stays connected to the J1939 port all the time. The trouble codes can be retrieved from it as well as it monitors engine functions full time. Best $160 I've spent.

Same here scan gauge is great, last thing I ever want to do is bring my coach to a dealer, so far so good never have.

You can buy a code reader for about $20 or go to an auto pars store and they will get you the code or codes.

I use the BlueFire App to view any fault codes that may have been recorded.

Lt.Dan,
So if I obtained this item, can you further assist me with,
1. On a 2012 Tiffin Phaeton, where does this scan tool plug in.
2. Does it give you a code number that you then have to go to a Cummins code chart to determine what is the cause for the code.
3. Is the extinguishing requirement that you correct the cause of code, or is their an additional step once the issue is resolved to get the code cleared.
4. Last question, as things change each year, at this point in time can you give me a bit more info. On brand name and model of the device you reccommend.

Thank you

You have two J1939 plug locations - one at the rear mounted on the fan shroud and one up front under the dash. It's a round plug so fairly easy to spot.

Once you get the code from your reader, you can do a Google Search, call Cummins, or call Freightliner. Some codes are a nuacence but others will lead to an engine derate or shut down.

OP has a diesel. I don't know of any diesel code readers for $20 bit if you know of one I'd buy it just to back up the Scangauge D.

There is a plug under the dash, left of the steering column and has a cover.
2. Does it give you a code number that you then have to go to a Cummins code chart to determine what is the cause for the code.
You can search on line or call Cummins with the code.
3. Is the extinguishing requirement that you correct the cause of code, or is their an additional step once the issue is resolved to get the code cleared.
Most non-crtical codes can be cleared with the Scangauge, other critical codes can not.
4. Last question, as things change each year, at this point in time can you give me a bit more info. On brand name and model of the device you reccommend.
Follow the link in my earlier post and it will take you to the exact device.
Hope this helps.

Where is the J1939 port? Is that the one in the dashboard?
