Engine will not start

I started the generator no problem. I tried to start engine, the chassis battery’s were too low after the coach sat for a few weeks with the switches turned off. I tried the auxiliary start it did not work. Let the generator charge chassis batteries for awhile then the Coach engine started. I let it run until it idled down. I give it a little bit of throttle and it died. I have a little over a quarter tank of fuel. Now it will not start. Don’t even know were to start looking for this problem? I am putting 25 gallons in it today in case the gauge is wrong. Not sure where the primer pump is. Maybe behind the screw on panel behind the door on the left facing the radiator?

First thing to do is put a charger on the chassis batteries for 24 hours and fully charge them up. Running the genset for awhile will not charge the batteries very much.
Not sure of your year but it should have a lift pump. On our 2014 Phaeton to prime the filters you would turn the key to on for 10-15 seconds, turn off wait a minute or so and repeat several times. That should prime the system if you got air in the system.

If your generator runs, the fuel level should be high enough for the engine to run.

The generator fuel pickup sits higher in the tank, preserving fuel for the engine.

I added 25 gallons of fuel and the fuel gage reads almost 3/4 of a tank.
After trying to start it a few times, I had an engine light come on and it has MIL in side the engine light. Is there a OBD port on this rig? And if so where is it? So I can find out if there is a code that might help to resolve this problem.

Which one of the coaches in your signature are you working on ?
I agree on the battery charger overnight to bring the batteries up. Before checking anything else out having the correct voltage would be job one. Poor voltage can cause all kinds of problems and having you chasing your tail. On my coach the pickup for the generator is approximately at 1/4 tank. That way the generator will be sucking air but still leave you with fuel for the engine to get to a fuel station rather than being stranded.
I'm pretty sure the code reader for a diesel in a pusher is different than anything you might have on hand. I have an older model that does OBD 1 & 2 and I haven't seen anywhere on my Cat that it might plug into.
Did that check engine light (MIL) stay lit when the engine was running or only while trying to crank it to life?
When was the last time you had the fuel filter changed?

Sorry it is the 2018 Tiffin Phaethon 40IH. It has a Cummins ISL9 450hp. The other rigs are sold and being used buy some other lucky families.
It will not start. I was getting it ready to take it to a Cummins Service center, to get a recall done, and a full service. It only has 18,000 miles on the rig so I don’t think the fuel filter has been changed yet. The engine light is emissions related according to the manual. The batteries are fully charged.

The dash display will show you the active codes. Turn the ignition on. Press both buttons below the speedometer. Use the left button to scroll down to the active fault codes. Use right button to select it.

Here is a list of what the codes mean. Attachment 389261

Anytime the MIL light is on indicates SCR or DEF problem. Do not shut off

The MIL light together with the low DEF light may indicate a component failure in the SCR system.*** If you experience these two lights (MIL & low DEF) on together you should seek service as soon as possible.* You can continue to operate the vehicle with these two lights on, but you may experience a reduction in engine power after a few hours of operation.** If you turn the engine off, or add fuel to the tank while these two lights are on together the engine computer will consider you to be in a safe place and may go into a full power reduction only allowing the engine to run at 1000 rpm.

Since you have been trying to start the engine, it could be something as simple as a "Fail to Wait to Start" MIL. That results from not waiting on the grid heater light to go out before starting. Refer to your chassis manual for instructions on how to pull the trouble codes as your dash is different from the pre 2018 models. If it's the FTWTS MIL, it will clear itself after three normal starts. The J1939 diagnostic port is in two places; below the dash to the left of the steering wheel and in the rear compartment above and right of the radiator. It's a green connector covered with a screw off cap.

The code is SPN 5585 FMI 18
Looks like it could be anything from lift pump to cracked fuel line to fuel rail system. Who knows? I can hear what I think is the fuel pump run for little bit then it turns off, thinking it is working fine. No help from Tiffin or Cummins. I have calls into two mobile RV guys. Trying to tow this rig out my road would be tough at best and next to impossible.

There was a recall on the high pressure fuel rails for the Cummins 450 hp, did you get that done?
The pump you hear is the lift pump that supplies fuel to the HPFP at the engine.

Gary,

Thanks for the reply.
No, I was getting it ready to take it down to Cummins to have the recall done. There is only 1800 miles on the rig, we have not used it much yet, bought it used. I am trying to get all the little and big issue fixed. This is one that hopefully is not that big. Lots of the issues are completed just a couple more to do for now. I am sure more will pop up. lots of the issues are my not knowing the rig. I am learning lots about it. The Code does talk about the high pressure fuel rail system.
Thanks again
Fred
