Fan Clutch

Hi folks,

We have a 2022 Allegro Bus with the 450HP Cummins and just over 19K miles. We replaced the first fan clutch 2 years ago and now have another one leaking oil. Has anyone else had a issue with this item? We are 3 months out of warranty so this and the power steering pump that is leaking is on us. Just seems odd to have 2 fan clutches go out but maybe it is just me.

Rick

Fan clutches often last the life of the vehicle. At least as long a water pump. Seems unusual to be on the replacing the 2nd one at 19K. Design problem? Work with Tiffen to see about Goodwill assistance and or a good truck shop that can offer an upgrade.

You and I may have the same bad luck Rick. With four failures, I'm on fan clutch #5 with the first one lasting 20k miles and #2 lasted 4k. If the oil is leaking out then it may go into free wheel which is what happened to ours last time in October 2023. Lockup is not as big a problem since you can still move, but if it goes into freewheel you are stuck. Contact the Tiffin chassis shop and they might work with you since you are that close to still being in warranty.

maybe they need to go back to the fan clutches used on the rear radiator rigs, electrically controlled.

I think Tiffin is as tired of this coach as I am. Tiffin did help us when we had so many issues after purchase with extending the one year to two year coverage which was needed. Thank you for the feedback.

Discontinued

Today I received a call from the service department. The fan clutch gearbox has been discontinued, and the new part requires shaft changes which cost another 600 dollars to replace from the Tiffin parts department. It would appear they have had enough failures to warrant a new design. Glad we can field test things to get the bugs out. Should not have to pay for inferior parts replacement.

WOW - how much do they get for the gear box?

Did they indicate why the new one is better?

$600 seems a little steep for a simple short driveshaft. You can probably get one custom made for $400 but maybe not worth the hassle for an extra $200...

Although if you get one custom made you can use grazable u-joints - which is better as long as they are actually serviced...

If you get this done, it would be interesting to get the distance from center to center on the old and new setup...

Ok now I’m confused, is it the fan clutch or the fan gear box?

Began with service saying the fan clutch was leaking then due to a discontinued part I could not replace just fan the clutch because it would not be compatible with the shaft on the original mount. I should never write when upset, just frustrated missing a trip.
Leigh and Tiffin have taken care of updating and replacing the part at no extra cost to me. Want to thank them for helping out supporting us in the Tiffin community.

So they have a different fan clutch now, which also requires replacement of the driveshaft and the fan gearbox?
