Flat towing

I am looking at a 1969 Jeepster Commando 4wdr 3 speed manual transmission to tow behind my 2013 allegro breeze motorhome. I have been searching the Internet to see if this vehicle is okay to flat tow. I cannot find a guide that goes that far back. Can anyone tell me if this is a flat towable vehicle or where I can go to find out?

If it has a transfer case it can probably be towed. If the steering wheel locks you will have to leave the key in and put in a battery disconnect.

And you leave the tranny in gear, with the xfer case in neutral. The tranny keeps the top side of the xfer case from turning with fluid friction. Every book I read has the tranny in gear, or park for auto.

find a jeep forum and see if you can get info, but probably if transfercase is in neutral and tran is in 3rd gear it would work. I'm no expert, so talk to a jeep mechanic also. Dave

I would talk with some one familiar with that Jeep, I know my 82 CJ7, which has the Dana 300 xfrer case, cannot be flat towed without disconnecting the rear drive shaft, with the driveshaft connected the rear output shaft bearing will not get lubricated unless the transmission is turning. There are a couple of videos out with the bearing seizing up.

I believe your Jeep has the Dana 20 transfer case and has the same issue with lubrication.

there are a lot of controversial posts on different Jeep forums that say you can and cant, so beware.

That is why I take 10 min, to disconnect and strap up the rear driveshaft.
