Ford V10 gas engine blew up
2014 Tiffin Allegro with gas Ford V10 engine. 33,000 miles blew up on our recent trip. Oil changed faithfully as well as all servicing. Was stranded in Utah. Tow to nearest city with RV mechanic $1500 and yes we have AAA Premier RV towing but not covered. Was told these things sometimes just happen, nothing we did. "This engine is too small for these RV's, blah, blah blah" Wish we knew this. Over $23,000 later and a new engine. Difficult times for a Disabled Vietnam Vet. Tiffin says contact Ford. Ford says without a recall nothing they will or can do. So beware.

Wow that is terrible. I have owned 2 motorhomes with that motor, and felt it preformed well. What "blew up" in your motor? Dropped a valve, spun a bearing, broke a crank, would like to know what broke.

For whatever reason there's been a few on here and on the Winnebago Owner's Forum. All had fairly low mileage. Computer guy will probably drop in with his experience.

Was it the three valve motor? If so, it seems those fail more often than the two valve V-10’s.

Ford V10 blowing up
I had a 2008 Winnebego Sightseer 34M with the V10. I blew it up. Dropped the 5th cylinder. $20,000 mistake.
Do not allow RMP's to exceed 4,000. I try to keep it below 3,500 when decelerating or accelerating. That is challenging for me, as I travel more in the mountains than on coastal flat land.
If anyone tells you 4,500 to 5,500 is okay they are wrong in my opinion.

I reved the 2 V10s I had up to max RPMs all of the time. First one was still running at 50,000 miles and the second was still running with over 45,000 miles. Never even had any repairs to either engine.

Maybe that applies to the three valve version, but the two valve version is quite a bit detuned, compared to the three valve version. I'm very sorry that happened to the OP.

Yes, it's terrible. Some bad luck for us. Yes, its a class A. Before this we've never had an issue with the engine. Mechanic said it was a rod. We had a Class A Bounder before this with the same engine. No issues.

5 Star,.UPFORD, Banks,.maybe others offer tunes to hold gears longer, reduce downshifting, and higher rpms.
Makes driving much more enjoyable. Without the tune my rv would downshift just looking at a hill. Not nearly as much anymore

Valves and occasion rods.... yup... they go.. seems more so on lower miles.... or maybe once they hit 100K+ people figure it was time and dont complain...
IMO of being a motorhead... These things should hold up fine even when revved,, up or down.. Valves when they are an issue most of the time it is the process of being made, quality etc,,,
Rods breaking , IMO bad part or design, seems design is good as so many of these are out there with 200K +...
If it was a spun bearing that rattled it... Process I have seen , normally upon inspection a tale is told... or lub related, rpm related... RPM on that v10 seems to be OK by design of that motor.... all in that series 4.6 , 5.4 , V10... have the rev factor.. only plagued by miledge and some cam phasers .. Still some go so long,, I have the baby 4,6 E250HD 259K and uses no oil and is quiet... just did a fuel pump last night as is leaves thursday for Michigan from PA, towing around 5K...
My brothers 5.4 in a F250 had 234K.. phaser changed, trans died and now frame is just weak...
so IMO ford should step up but the V10 is a retired motor ... supplies about done,,, so they will not be doing any warranty... they will play it out at best,,,.. parts house with machine shop..
I said this before on early mid 70's into 80's 460 fords , 429 and 370... The Heads and Valves... I learned how to do valves, guides, seats at 14 hanging out at a local shop that was feed work from all over and especially ,,,,Drag Racer Joe Amato , had a distribution called Keystone and a chain of A$A Auto stores.... Their Box trucks ran hammer down as that company grew rapidly.... 460, manifolds, plane jobs and valves loosing heads or just burnt.. Ford never did a recall, had a bulletin or 2... did a few early fixes... or we had to send in bills on rare occasions
I did have a fleet of my own towing stuff and a factory reman 370 (baby 460) broke a rod.. upon inspection... Motor had 2 stamped #7 rods.. and one was different casting series... SO at about 13K only, she made a mess...
I had a 429 out of a 69 tbird and a set of marine rods I nabbed,, I had built by Tim Richards, Joes Wrench .. But over 70K on it and it still runs on at a local salavage yard dragging stuff offroad.. Last the guy told me it flipped over and speedo died,, LOL.
Long BS story but , I find these later V10 Quality factor upon build and parts used went LOW ... I know Jasper who rebuild have done some changes to the 5.4 stuff to improve and a few V10 more so on heads... A good Friend Rick Ford was VP of Sales for many years and hooked me up with bullet proof E40D trans and a couple motors... Jasper stuff back then was solid, pricey but good.
I only cringe as todays prices are so high..... for the folks in need...
