The 2013 Ford Escape we bought recently has one of those type of gas caps that doesn't have to be removed to add fuel. Not sure if it was OEM or an accessory add on, but it's definitely convenient to use.
There is a little "trap door" in the center of the cap where the nozzle is inserted, but a bit further in (about 2") there is a little resistance as the nozzle is forced past another seal. From then on, it's fill up as usual, and no significant spillage when the nozzle is withdrawn.
I did learn that you can't just add fuel system cleaner or other additives through that cap just by trying to insert the bottle. Now that I think about it further, i'm now sure the cap was OEM because the factory provided a long skinny funnel that the Owner's Manual states is necessary to refuel from a gas can. The business end of that funnel is the same length and diameter as a pump nozzle and it too can be felt pushing its way past the inner seal.
I'm thinking that could be a solution to your problem.
