Generator question

I have new house and chassis batteries but my generator will not start without using the booster or starting the main engine. Any thoughts as to why?

When you push the boost switch OR start the engine, the isolation/charge relay closed and sends chassis battery power to the house battery disconnect solenoid. That sends the power to the house loads and the generator.

Try Your house items with the shore power off. If the rest of the house items work, then you need to follow the generator cable to where it hooks to the house battery.

If nothing works without shore power,it may be a circuit breaker just down the cable from the battery. Look for it.

If the generator started before the battery change , the batteries could be installed incorrectly or there is a bad or loose connection would be my guess.

Generator start

I donít know much about this coach since I just purchased it used. The house batteries were replaced in November of 2019 and I replaced the chassis batteries last week. I thought that was going to solve the generator start issues.

November of 2019 could be a lifetime ago for batteries in a used RV.

If they were left discharged for a long period, they can go bad. Don't assume they are good just by the date.

So, did the generator ever start before you bought the MH?
If you have to use the booster or run the engine, I would start with connections. Also check the cables for corrosion, and if not visible, they could still have internal corrosion. This has been brought up before.
And as mentioned, those house batteries could be bad. Suggest you get them tested.

Generator question

I had the batteries tested today and they are fine. I appreciate all of the help.
I am going to replace the cables from the generator to the batteries based on some very sound advice from one of the members. I will update once complete.

Hi Poppie,
we had exactly the same behavior, finally figured it out. I had checked all the connections on the front bulkhead and the rear of the generator to no avail. Our ceiling light would flicker when boondocking. One day when I went to start the generator and used the boost switch the lights stopped flickering which led me to the eureka! moment that it was not a bad ground but a bad positive connection from the battery to the busbar just underneath the boost relay.

I took it off and discovered a healthy dose of electrical tape underneath the lug on the wire from the battery. A couple of pictures of what ours looked like, perhaps you got an extra dose of tape too.
