House batteries go dead fast

I have just put new house batteries in my 2008 allegro bus. I have charged them with the generator and they were full. After two days I went back and they were dead. I hooked up my 12v batt. charger to the pedestal and after about 1/r hr there was enuf juice to start the generator and charge them up. I shut off both the house and chassis batteries with the battery disconnect switches. the house batts. still discharge quite quickly, it seems to me. what is causing this problem?? thanks, John

there is something drawing power from them. It could be any or all of several things, such as CO/propane monitor, refrigerator, control panel, radio in standby mode and more.
Are you currently using the RV? If not, look for the battery disconnect switch. If not found, disconnect the battery.

Remove house main negative battery cable, connect volt meter (set to amps), between cable and negative battery post, if you read any amps you have that amount of draw “somewhere” if you have no amps draw, battery/s may be no good. Disconnect each one separate so they are stand alone and load test.

If you are showing any draw down start shutting down breakers or pulling fuses until it stops. Then you will have found the draw down.

Your house battery disconnect does not disconnect the inverter. The inverter has a power draw even when turned off. It will drain the batteries in a couple days.

To preclude this - pull a battery cable or add another disconnect right at the batteries.

Tiffin coaches of recent years now have a separate inverter disconnect switch.

Vince and Gary are correct. The inverter is connected directly to the batteries. If you turn the inverter off, the batteries will stay up longer but for maximum storage install a disconnect on the invert line or pull a battery cable.

Question for the OP. You say you got new batteries and now they go dead in a couple of days. Did the old batteries hold the Charge longer? If so are you sure nothing else has changed?

One thing you could do is install a battery monitor which would measure the current going into and out of your batteries.

On my '07 Allegro Bay, I found out that the propane/Co2 detector is wired direct to the house battery (in the electrical compartment), and can never be shut off - unless you un-bolt the negative battery lead. However, 2 days is a bit fast for battery run-down on your rig. As suggested previously here, you need an inductive Amp meter to determine what the load actually is currently, then start pulling fuses and checking the load until you find where your load(s) is coming from.

I had this problem once and discovered a couple of the basement lights were on. You just have to keep looking until you find the culprit. Flipping off breakers is a good way to start.

Seems to have been working for me for many years, your amp meter is basically now a shunt.
