You should have a switch labeled "Steps" on the control panel by the door.
It does what you are looking for.
Be sure your ignition is OFF.

The step switch disables the retract. In the off position, the steps should stay out until you turn on the ignition. When the switch is on, they will go in and out each time you open the door even with the ignition off.

Or as we learned, a bad engine battery affected ours to retract even when the step switch was off. Lesson learned.

Ours was the opposite, the steps did not retract when starting the engine. Found ourselves driving with them out one day!

Dealer fixed the wiring, which had been done wrong to begin with. Check that out too. Works great now.

Mine seem to extend even with the switch in the off position and the ignition off.

They will stay out with the switch off. But it's annoying that they won't stay in...

I am on an uneven spot and have to use portable steps. Pulling the 25 amp fuse seemed to be the only way to keep them from extending.

On my old Winnebago...the steps stayed in or out if the switch was off.

Try pulling your keys out of the ignition switch. As I recall, that seemed to solve my step issue.
