Island Drawer Latch
2019 Phaeton 40IH. Latch on top drawer of pull out is broken. Latch is at back of drawer and my short arms cannot reach the latch. Any reason not to install latch on the face on front edge of drawer?

Latches on most drawers are on the front. I suspect your latch is on the back because the design of the drawer doesn't provide enough room for a front latch. If there is enough room for a front latch, go ahead and try it.

If you pull island out, take drawers out, then the island top is removable by taking out the four screws holding it on. You then may have enough room to reach rear of island area.

Your drawer latched are most likely like these. If so, the latch part on the left is attached to the cabinet frame and the prong part on the right is attached to the drawer. What happens is the latch part attached to the cabinet frame doesn't open completely and the prong on the drawer cannot go into it. I fashioned a hook on the end of a wire coat hanger so that I could rech in and pull the lock out and it would accept the drawer prong. As mentioned above the whole cabinet frame can also be removed for access. If you do that, I would suggest replacing all of the latches with new ones as they get worn and weak so that they don't open and stay open.

If the cheap plastic grab latches are the issue one can usually pull open the catch (spring loaded), usually on the openable drawer or door or maybe the 4 screws attaching the larch parts may have simply come loose in the cheap wood backing.
They usually should last a few years & can be purchased on Amazon where a pack of 10 costs just about the same as Camping World charges for 1.

I have replaced a number of the grabber latches with replacement purchased from Amazon. The issue is accessibility of the latch on the island drawer.

Wrong, it’s not like that.
Wingnut60 has it right, follow his instructions and you can easily access the latch. It could just be a loosened screw or cable.
I had to get to the rear side to fix a panel that loosened and was blocking the drawer from closing.

As a follow-up to the earlier post--I solved all my cheap plastic latch problems, including the island drawers, by installing soft-close slides on all drawers. No more busted latches, tripped catches, etc. Used 75# soft-close from Accuride. Wife has all silverware in top drawer of the island, it has never come open since installing the soft-close units.

We replaced latch on problem drawer. RV tech used long extension on his drill to reach rear latch. Took him about 5 min before he did some additional repairs.
