Jumping Back In... 2010-2012 Tiffin RED

So, we're at the point we can consider getting back into a motorhome. My last was a 2009 Tiffin FRED.

This time, we're looking at the RED; we don't need super luxury, nor do we need a new coach and the depreciation to come. A 10 year-old RED seems ideal on many counts.

What are we getting into with this elderly a coach? And, realistically, while I've met Bob Tiffin many times, I don't really expect him to goodwill a complete rebuild.

We just found a 2013 34 QFA RED from the original owner that has 44,000 miles. When not being used the few months abyear they kept it in a climate controlled airplane hanger. It is as close to showroom condition as I think we could have ever found. The very few things we wanted to change were our choice not that they needed to be changed. So far LOVE it and are just waiting for the nation to open up so we can head out and enjoy it.

We found a 2011 36 ft Red in the summer of 2018, and have put about 18k miles on it so far. My previous rigs were an Airstream Classic gas, and a Monaco Diplomat diesel.

I bought it knowing it needed a little help, and budgeted accordingly when I purchased it. So far, I have only done routine maintenance, put on tires, shade motors to name a few.

My biggest surprise was that Tiffin actually made a diesel motorhome that did not have an Inverter as standard equipment. So make sure the one you buy has that, if you think you'll need it.

On the positive side, it rides good, handles good and gets great gas mileage. We sometimes pull just 1 motorcycle on a small trailer and get between 11.5 to 12.5 mpg. (64 mph) If we pull a car or our enclosed 4,800# trailer, I will get between 10.3 to 11.0 mpg.

Out tow capacity is adequate, but I think they increased it on later years.

The systems all work good and Tiffin did some good engineering throughout the coach. We feel this is an excellent unit for our uses, which is about 10k miles per year, and about 60 - 90 nights spent in the rig.

Thank you!

Since I've never had a 10 year-old MH, this is going to be new ground.

We're probably going to do without the toad this time; while Uber/Lyft may not be an option everywhere we go, it likely will be enough times to more than offset the few places we'll have to make other arrangements. We'll see. Worst case, I find a used CR-V down the road and have it set up.

One thing's for sure: a whole lotta stuff has changed since I was last on the road.

Look for the residential fridge and the dual heat pumps as this gives you the 8kw generator. Your year model range crosses the change to DEF so that may be a factor. Good luck!

For auto "rental" look into Turo. We rented through them when we needed more seats. It's basically a car share service where you're using someone local's car for "x" amount of time. Worked well for us!

Most of the ones we've looked at have the 8k genset but the awful "not-cold" refrigerator. This will be one of our first mods.

Thank you!

Thank you. I thought there was a service like this for the times an Uber just won't work.. I'll look into it.

It's a different animal, by we bought an 8 year old Tiffin gasser, close to showroom condition (8,900 miles). We are now on our second year with it and have had zero problems. Used it hard last year, toting 5 of us 8k miles around the country. Just throwing this in, as I know how nerves can grow buying older. It is possible for the dream to come true without huge depreciation!

We plan to do, as you, and get a 10 year old RED about 10 years from now. Best wishes.

Well, we did it:

Bought a 2014 Allegro RED 38QBA. Really nice shape, 31,000 on the odometer, about 800 on the genset. It has the res refridge and a 2,000 watt inverter. The inspector was out today to check it out (it's in Houston) and only found one real problem: the rear AC unit was very weak. The dealer is changing it out over the weekend.

We're flying out Monday and picking it up Tuesday. Heading home Wednesday.

So, we actually bought a 2014 38QBA from Demontrond RV in Houston. I've dealt with them before years ago and still haven't been able to get the taste out of my mouth. So I went in with eyes open.

I had a full inspection by a local inspector they really don't like there at Demontrond so I knew I picked the right guy. The coach is solid. We had a new Safe-T-Plus installed on the way back to California. So far, it's been great.

Still working on the outfitting. Got my mobile office set up so I can work on the road. Internet solution seems OK for now. Installing a slightly bigger monitor on the swing arm. Creating dog crates in the bunk space. Chris Berry will be doing the woodwork to convert that area. Also replacing all TVs and home theater equipment with real residential stuff. Lot of work going into it but we're keeping it for a while.

And it has a cool bumper which I've never seen before.
