Kenwood Radio replacement

2017 Phaeton 40AH

I searched the forum, google, and Youtube with no luck. I have the Kenwood deck which in my opinion sucks. I don't care about the Nav and just want wireless Apple Carplay. I wan to replace it with an Alpine and started to pull the old deck out and realized it's got the large sleeve that holds in the current deck. None of the new models come with these anymore. If anyone has done this upgrade please let me know how you accomplished it. The pic I attached is from my coach with the radio pushed back to show the sleeve. Curious what others have done. Thanks

Assuming that your head unit is double din. You probably have option with going for another double din or a single din. Any double din head unit should work. But you may have to remove old cage, install new cage, and get wiring harness adapter. Crutchfield Audio should be able to help. There many YouTube videos on swapping head units. I swapped our original Kenwood for a much newer Kenwood head unit. Took about 15 min, including new mounting cage. Fortunately, the new Kenwood was plug and play with the old unit, so no adapter cable required.

Which unit did you purchase?

I have an older 2015 model (DNX 571tr) that the maps probably not supported by garmin anymore. Not worth trying to upgrade it.

This one would work. It has a HD screen which is important to me as it is easier to see when the sun is bright. We bought our 2019 Phaeton used in March of 2021. The Kenwood in from the factory was difficult to see and did not have CarPlay. It did not have a HD screen. So I replaced it with one similar to this with a HD screen.

As for the cage, they are held in by using a screwdriver to push down tabs in the cage along the perimeter. To remove the cage, use a small screwdriver or pick to pull up those tabs. It will slide out then and you can then install the cage for the new radio.

The link below is for Kenwood's RV/Truck model. It does not have a HD screen.

I installed a Kenwood DMX8707S, purchased on FB Marketplace. This unit is now discontinued and does not have Nav. It is touchscreen and supports Android Auto and CarPlay. I purchased new mounting cage from eBay.

I have the same year and upgraded to a double din JVC unit. Mine is plug in Android Auto/Apple carplay. No built in navigation.

Basically any double din will fit. You need to use a release tool that you may have for the old radio plus the the new one will have them. Sometimes getting it out can be a bit tricky and take some persistence.

The wiring connectors into the radio seemed non standard, so required some rework. The wire colors on the radio seemed standardized, so re making the wiring harness adapter which is removable was straight forward..

Here are a couple of pictures, that may or may not be helpful.

Good luck!!!

As far as the sleeve, I was able to re use it. The double din mount is standard, and the sleave is what the radio mounts to. I think I needed to manipulate it a bit to get the radio to lock onto it.
