New (to me) Phaeton - A Couple of Questions
I am new to this. For camping, I am moving from a backpack to a 2011 Phaeton 36QSH. We have put down the deposit and the ball is moving forward.
I have contacted Red Bay and found out the service history for the coach as well as the recall/TSB work that was done. The news is all good. The coach also looks great, which comports with the service history. I have a couple of questions for the experienced Tiffin users as follows:
1. When motoring down the road, do you run your generator so you can run the AC or heat pumps along with the fridge?
2. One of the screens on the dash appears to have a GPS on it. Is this updateable and is it a Trucker/RV type of GPS or is it simply a basic GPS?
3. If the GPS is basic, what are y'all running for a Trucker/RV GPS?
I appreciate any input on these matters.

Yes to running generator for AC or heatpump while driving. Onan recommends running the generator every time you use your coach.
Depending on radio/GPS you have, most are upgradable via a sd chip. Also every original GPS were trucker type. You should have the option to change parameters (height, width, etc.)

If it's too hot for the dash A/C to keep me adequately cool, then yes I run the generator and the roof top AC. If the dash heat can't keep up, I run the propane furnace rather than the heat pumps. You shouldn't need generator for the fridge. If it's a residential fridge, which I have, it runs off the inverter and batteries. The alternator is keeping the batteries charged. When I stop for lunch, I'll frequently fire up the generator for the microwave and coffee maker.

The GPS is not RV/Truck informed. I don't know if upgradable. I use the Garmin 760 RV GPS (current model is either 770 or 780)
3. If the GPS is basic, what are y'all running for a Trucker/RV GPS?

Your generator should be run under load at least two hours each month. In Florida, my generator is usually "on" when I motoring to keep the coach cool. The alternator is strong enough to operate the Fridge without the generator.
If you need it, use it. If you don't need, don't use it (unless you need to exercise it). Realize that while you are running your generator, you will be burning about 0.5 gallons/hour

I don't know what dash GPS you have. The price of portable GPS and phone apps is so reasonable, that trying to update your Dash Model should be a lower priority.
I don't depend upon only one GPS. I use multiple to ensure that I won't be taking a road too small, hitting a low clearance, etc. Sometimes, the route needs to have some detailed investigation, and most other times, it is very simple. Use multiple tools to plot your track.

I agree with Nick about the GPS. Our '15 Allegro RED had a built in GPS which I used for one trip and never used again. I prefer a stand alone GPS that I can download pre-planned trip routes. In addition, the Garmin unit I still have has lifetime map updates.

Well, we got to spend some time with the coach today and I played with the radio/gps. Then I looked it up on JVC’s web site. It does not appear to be supported any longer. The radio part works fine and I will get a Garmin RV GPS for the GPS duty. We ran the heat pumps with the generator and that worked fine. We are moving forward with the deal.
