Onan Problem

I have a 7000 watt gas Onan that runs great without the A/C turned on, but sometimes NOT every time it will stop running after the A/C has been on for a few hours...any ideas what the problem could be? I have had both coil packs & the fuel pump & spark plugs replaced.

This generator is in a 2007 32BA gas using a Ford chassis..

Check your reluctor where your brushes are located and make sure the contact area where the brushes meet the reluctor are nice and clean. Should be nice and shiney. Bet they are both dark from your brushes. Good luck

There is a company flight systems that makes after market Onan parts
They will set free troubleshooting calls with you to help us the problem
I’ve had 3 coaches two we gas generators
I took gents to Onan to repair four times and wasted my money
There after I used flight systems and repaired myself and fixed the root cause

https://www.flightsystems.com/

There’s a place on their site to request an appointment to discuss the problem
They will have you perform various tests and then call them back
Worked for me

The generator should shutdown if it detects low oil or over heat. Maybe check out the sensors.

How long ago was it since you replaced those items? The control board could be bad and causing this issue as well. A place called Fight Systems manufactures aftermarket boards for these generators and I purchased one for my generator, it does not shut down like the original board does. I'm sure there is a company that can bench test your board for you so you could alleviate this as being a potential issue. Good Luck

Those items were replaced 6 months ago, I will look into having the board tested.

Tiffin used a second fuel filter between chassis and generator, look real good for it. I had same problem, it resolved after replacing the filter.

How often should the slip rings be cleaned?
Although this is 2007 model it only has 325 hrs on the generator.

The only time slip rings need cleaning is when they get corrosion from lack of use IMHO. I have never cleaned them in 20+ years, 2 different rigs.

You tube flight system gen repair.. or onan generator repair by flight system.. they explain why you need to keep slip rings clean.. you should be able to see them with a strong flashlight.. they need to be nice and shinny.. they can be cleaned in about 5mins.. cheapest and fastest place to start..
If that does not help.. you need to remember those critters.. they love to eat on fuel line.. or your fuel line is 16yrs old.. and transition to rubber over the tank.. and f/p will suck in air. Which will do this.. your carb may need cleaning.. you can do this.. without taking it apart or off generator.. see my old posts..
Good luck and keep us posted
