Here is a schematic of the plumbing that I did for the water softener installation.
I hope that this will help you with your installation.

In our almost 10 years of RV travel, our On-the-Go water softener was hooked up and sitting right next to the trailer. No one ever bothered it as many did not know what it was for. I never worried about it.

Mounting it in the RV will create a problem with accessing the top to put the salt in.

In the basement of ous bus there is plenty of space on top to pour in the salt.

I opted for a Reverse Osmosis system since really only concerned with drinking and cooking water. I'm almost finished installing it but had some water leaks to take care of which will get done once it warms up more.

Bath, toilet, shower water is fine from the inlet filter assembly.
