Our 2007 Phaeton Norcold Refrigerator is DEAD!

Has anyone replace their Norcold fridge with a res. style fridge?

Yep. DW and I put in a Kitchen Aid two door in a 2008 Bus. Needed to use the 2 door because the refer was not in the slide but in the hall. Also needed to drop the base a bit as it was too tall, but it worked just great. Oh yeah, the driver window had to come out to get the new one in, but that was not a bad job at all.

If you want more, detailed info, just run a search on Residential installations or Norcold (commonly called Notcold) replacements. You will find quite a lot of postings on the plus & minuses of installations. I did it about 2 years ago and have been very happy with my residential fridge.

Also, I don't worry about running it while traveling, because it will stay cold for at least the day that you travel, as long as the doors are not opened too often. Lots of info on this subject if you do a search.

The unit lost its ammonia gas due to a bad leak. Should we just replace the Cooling Unit with a new one from Arcticold or Amish cooling unit?

I would try contacting Ford's first. They may know of a shop close to you that can correctly diagnose and fix your fridge.

We replaced the 12 cu ft Notcold in our previous Tiffin motorhome with a Samsung RF197 (no longer available - superseded by RF18). It was one of the best mods we have ever done to any of our RVs. We now have a 5th wheel with a residential refrigerator. Unless something very drastic happens, we will never own another RV with a gas absorption RV refrigerator.

Whether to replace or repair depends a lot on you. If you do a lot of boondocking, you may find an RV refrigerator to be better suited. However, residential refrigerators will work for boondocking, especially with the addition of extra batteries.

Also, if you are handy and can do all or some of the work yourself, switching to residential will probably be just about the same cost as replacing the cooling unit on your old refer. It cost us around $2000 for a mobile tech to come to our site to replace the cooling unit on our old Notcold. It cost just about the same for me to replace the Notcold myself (with a little help lifting from my friends) a year or so later. The replacement cost includes the refer (around $1200) plus all the wood and other materials.

Not sure of the brand, but a member of our camping club found a refrig at Lowe's that fit the space for the old one. Might be worth checking with Lowe's; Sams Club or Costco - no use going to Camping World. Dave

We replaced a dead Norcold in a 2007 Allegro Bus, with the Samsung 197. Pretty much fit the same spot. With the door removed the Samsung went thru the driver side emergency window- just barely and did not require anything but propping the window full up. If you have an extended warranty they should reimburse you the cost of the replacement of the cooling tubes on the old fridge. As I recall we had about $1000 in labor, and $1000 for the Samsung (in black finish). I think the old unit became a bait tank at a fish camp! That's about what it was good for. We love the Samsung and don't boondock so the original battery/inverter configuration works fine.

Dead Norcold

We replaced the refrigeration pack in the back of our Norcold with the Amish unit - we had a 2002 Monaco Diplomat.

It wasn't that hard, we left the fridge in the coach and was able to get it done. There are some good videos out there on how to do it, and it was much like the video said. The Fridge did perform better after the rebuild.

We opted too go that way because we wanted the ability to use the propane instead of electricity to operate it. And, we didn't have to redo cabinetry.

That was about two years ago now. We just traded off the home for a new 2016 Allegro Bus 45OP that is supposed to be ready next week.

Yep, replaced the cooling unit a few years ago in the Dometic unit with an Amish unit. Then replace the unit almost a year ago. WOW, how time flies when you're having fun with the DW's liver cancer!
