Phaeton exhaust brake

I have a 2008 Phaeton and when i turned the exhaust brake on it makes a loud clunk sound. Does anyone have any ideas as to the problem?

The clunk is probably the transmission shifting to a lower gear. Sometimes it skips the gear in between. Mine does the same thing.

Is this a new issue?
Used to not do it?
