OP, was it below freezing when you first had the problem? You could have water in the system if you haven't been keeping up with air drier filter changes. You didn't say where you are, so just a guess.

Happened to me. I noticed there was unusual air escaping from behind the brake switch. Turns out it was a bad brake controller in the back. Took a really good mechanic a day to rebuild it because there were no parts available for a long time.

More than likely you havea defective canaster not releasing brake..I assume you mean only one brake. There should be 5 inch or so threaded bolt with a pin in one end on least one of canasters. This is inserted in chamber an by tightening 15/16 nut you release that brake.
In any case you eed to get it fixed pronto.Eighter your self or have a ccompenent person fix it.There is great risk of fire driving with it smoking .An if you release that brake as i have said rememberr you will not have any braking on that wheel till properly fixed.

Brakes

You may have a quick release value going bad that supply air to both sides on the brake chamber

Locked Brakes

Not sure if you have fixed your problem yet but I had the same thing happen to my 09 Phaeton. Avoiding the long story, mine was an air valve mounted to the frame. The mobile mechanic used a caging tool to release the brakes and we got it to Freightlliner for repair. The part was only $70 but the labor was $550. Let me know if you want more specifics and we can talk offline.

I ordered a relay valve. Both rear brakes locked up with the spring brakes. No air pressure from the valve to the canisters to release the brakes.
