When I bought my 2010 Phaeton there was a “Road Light” switch that was broken. I found one identical at Bunkhouse conversions but when I wired it up like the original I just get the switch illumination all the time and no road lights. I assume the previous owner worked in this light at some point and did not get the wiring correct. I am attaching a photo of the broken switch as it was when I removed it. I was hoping someone would recognize the problem. The new switch is identical. Thanks in advance as always.

Have you tried jumping 12v+ to the wire going to the lights to see if they work when powered directly, so to speak. I would recommend trying this or check with your DVOM that you are getting power to the output wire/terminal. If they are powered through the switch or a jumper and don't work, you are possibly looking for a relay that is not working or a problem at the lights (bad bulbs, broken ground, etc.) or a problem in the wiring between the lights and switch. My bet is a bad relay or possibly fuse for the relay/lights.

Thanks for the reply. I was about to update I did get the road light working with teh switch. The only issue I am having now is the switch is illuminated all the time and not just when the headlights are on. I probably still have something cross but I fixed the first problem by swapping the two blacks.I read somewhere that this light may stay on all the time by design but it makes no sense illuminating that switch permanently. I guess thats why they put a coach battery cutoff switch

Do your other switches there stay lit all the time as well? Do they light up only when the switch is on? That switch should act the same as the other switches in that location.

If they aren't acting the same, I'd test each wire to see which ones are hot all the time, and, as you suggested, are any hot only when the headlights are on.

If you don't have a wire hot only when the headlights are on, then there is no way the switch could be controlled that way. But you might be able to just have it on when the switch is on. That would require you to determine what switch terminal lights the switch, if it has one. (It could be connected to the hot wire inside the switch if always on. ) Off the MH, attach ground and then run a hot wire to other terminals until switch lights. Then use your wire that goes to the road light and jump to that terminal.

Yes. Good advice. I have teo lights. One is the label light and the other is the switches is on light. The switxh on light is hoteired to the out lead and works when the light is switched on just like it should. The cargo light comes on as well. The label light has its own independent terminal. It seems I have two hots full time when the chassis lights are off because no matter which i use i get the always on label.

Also to answer your question it is the only light on that panel that stays lit.

I will break out the multimeter. To your point I need to know what each does and go from there.
