Roof Band Cracks? on a 2008 Phaeton
I am looking at a 2008 Phaeton to purchase. I read about slide floor, wet bay floor and Roof Band Cracks?? What do I need to look for on the Roof Band Cracks?

The first thing I would do is call Tiffin and ask if the recalls were dealt with. You will need the vin. For the roof, you can see where the repair was done on each side. If the roof does not have rivets down on each side, but simply looks like a full, untouched fiberglass roof, it has not been done.

Here is a pic of a fixed roof.

Thanks for the response. I didn't realize that there was a recall on these. So the picture shows rivets covered by Dicor or sealant is the recall fix? Do it actually correct the problem and hold up? I will try to get the vin.
Thanks again.

Yeah, the rivets with Dicor are the fix. Ours has held up. You need to inspect the roof periodically, like any other roof, but the rivets were a Tiffin engineered fix.
The wet bay fix was to replace the floor of the bar with a plastic tub. The original was chipboard.

Not quite! The curved fiberglass portion between the roof and side of the coach (more commonly called the roof rail) was replaced with an aluminum rail and attached with those rivets. The fiberglass rail developed small cracks and necessitated the recall which was never actually a recall as owners were never officially notified but relied on word of mouth or a visit to the service center to learn of it.

You are correct. I should have stated that the rivets were the visible evidence that is easily seen…
As to tracking the issues, if an impacted coach has been to Red Bay (Tiffin), they check the three issues and note if they have been fixed. I was able to get info from Red Bay on the status of the fixes to my rig when I was in the buying process.
When I went to Red Bay for service, they looked again. I asked about that and they stated the service guys just verify the repairs are done and don’t bother looking on the computer. I’m not sure what Tiffin would do if they found a repair was not done, but at this point, I suspect they would refer you to Kimbroughs and you would be on your own to foot the bill.

Did they all develop cracks or only some of them?
Thanks for all the responses.

Enough did that Tiffin started fixing all of whether they had leaked or not. It was a design issue.
Our rig was fixed before we bought it, so I don’t know if Tiffin did the work in house or sent it out, probably to Kimbroughs. With a 2008, your rig is too old to get serviced at Tiffin, but they will gladly answer your questions via phone. My guess is that Kimbroughs did the work and would gladly do yours, but you would be on the hook for the cost. If you factor this into the price, it could still be a good deal. Either way, I would do all the homework before agreeing to a price.

Most did, but probably not all, especially if the roof rails were painted black. Our 2007 developed cracks in 2011 and Tiffin replaced the rails that year.

Curious what y’all think about using a type of “truck bed liner” spray to coat roof rail.
Would a spray coating of a “Rhino Lining” type of product work to seal and coat the rail?
Prepping rail, and protecting non rail area from over spray would be a must.
What are your thoughts. All ears. Thanks!

It might work to seal the current cracks but I doubt it would keep future cracks from forming through the seal though it may. More importantly, I think it would look very bad since those rails are painted to match the side of the coach where the rails touch the side and thus visible from the ground, and continue to look worse and worse as time goes on and they are exposed to the sun. The expense of having them repaired is not that great and maintains the value of the coach, just my personal opinion.

We bought a 2008 Phaeton I think in 2015. We took it to Redbay two years in a row on the way to Florida to have a couple things fixed. They went over it really good and fixed a whole bunch of stuff that we weren't aware of. That was back when they did stuff like that.
1. The roof rails you mention they did automatically. We didn't even know about that.
2. We had the cabinet in the bedroom on the passenger side pulled away from the wall. My wife wanted them to screw it back to the wall. What they did was jack up that corner of the rig and weld some new support brackets because it was sagging. Not enough support when it was built.
3. The big slide on the passenger side which contained the microwave and sink. The overhead cabinet doors were not lined up. It looked like the doors were not installed right. It was because the cabinets were sagging from too much weight on that side. They put a support from the counter top to the overhead cabinets and the doors aligned back up perfect.
4. The right front bumper had a dented place that looked like the previous owner had bumped into something. Our coach was owned by someone in Minnesota. The dent was actually pushed out and not in. They had a problem with water being trapped in the tubing and freezing causing that. They fixed the bumper and drilled drain holes in the tubing so it would not do it again.
5. My wife spotted the cracks under the bedroom slide while it was in the body shop doing the bumper and they fixed it right then.
6. We thought the wet bay was fine until someone told me you couldn't really spot the problem good unless you got down and looked at it on the outside. It was really sagging. We had a local RV repair shop and Tiffin sent them the parts and a CD video of how to do it and paid them to do it.
7. The slide floors were known to rot out and they checked them at the factory and said they were in good shape.
8. We had electric stabilizer jacks and had leveling problem a lot. The dealer we bought them from replaced one jack and it worked a little better. When we were at Tiffin we had them look at them. The guy immediately said the right front jack was bad and replace it. Worked fine after that.
9. We had them change out 4 windows because of leaking seals. We got a good deal on the windows and was as cheap as having them resealed by a shop.
When we were having the work done they had the the guy that did the shield work on the front of the rig come in to see what he would have to do after they painted it. He said it was a clear coat of paint and not a stick on shield. I don't know why they quit doing that. Those stick on shields start looking bad after a few years. The paint job still looks good now.
Most of the stuff they did was free.
The 2008 had a bunch of changes in stuff, most were good.
I know they have changed and things are not like that now. When we were there they were even working on some old rigs from the 80's and 90's. A bunch of the factory workers went out on their own and work on them. You can get most anything done in those shops. So you can go to Redbay and still get good work done. Tiffin used to have a list of those shops you could download and call to get in.
We sold ours in 2018 and got a house. Sure miss those nice Florida winters. We full timed for 4 years.

Tiffin has a 10 year limit on the age of rig they service. BUT, they still have the list and you can get pretty much anything you want/need done at Red Bay. Red Bay Acres also has a list of service providers who can work on your rig at the campground.
