Step cover

2014 40qbh. Today our step cover stopped working. I can hear the motor but it won’t move. Of course, it’s stuck closed so getting stuff out after our trip will be fun! Any ideas?

Is there an emergency over-ride to open the cover? Sounds like a broken drive belt. I remember reading a thread several years ago about how to replace the belt, the thread even had pictures and drawings of the electric drive system.

The step cover drive is a long worm screw driven by a gear motor. On mine, the plastic gears inside the gear motor stripped and i had to replace the unit. It's sold as a complete assembly in the Tiffin store.

Had exactly the same thing happen. Unfortunately there is no manual release. LT Dan is correct about the long screw rod. To get the step cover back you have to get out of the coach and unscrew the rod mount from the bottom of the cover. That is a bit of a challenge as you have to get behind the vertical piece on the face of the slide. The bracket is all the way back toward the rear of the cover so it’s a long reach. Once you get it unscrewed you can push the step cover back. To replace the motor you have to extend your generator and remove the access plate underneath the centerline of the coach. Nothing easy. I wrote Bob Tiffin about the manual release issue and it was put in one of the Tiffin magazines, but nothing ever done. Mine goes out again just going to make a manual cover and lat it over the stairwell.

On our 2014 Phaeton, the locking collar loosened up . You can remove the cover by removing the 4 bolts that hold it to the mechanism. I seem to recall I added the, from the stairwell.
On our bus, the front bracket fell off. Fortunately it was parked at the factory for other repairs
