Sounds like a loose wire . Look in the DS forward power bay for a wire marked step power wire. It might be loose causing the steps to work when they want. You can check underneath the stair assenbly by removeing the access cover as well for perhaps a loose connection or bad ground wire.

X2..or these motors can stick sometimes. Give the motor a rap or 3 with a hammer. That gave me another 8 months with the motor on a previous coach (sob).

I've had 2 issues w/our steps. The first issue occurred last year where the step would not extend when the door was opened. That was resolved by spraying some WD40 in the door jamb switch and its been fine since. The second time the steps acted up was when leaving the campsite and the steps would not retract. A couple of taps on the motor seems to have resolved the issue, but planning on replacing the motor.

Could be a bad ground also. Try to find where the step motor is grounded. Sometimes the connection can be semi bad. Try to get good clean metal at the attachment point if grounder to frame. Just as important as no loose power connection. Jeff
Good luck. Be sure a post your solution.

I have kwikee brand steps in my 36LA and have had to replace the step motor about every two years or so. Everything you guys have tried I have done and it has always ended needing to have a new motor installed. easy 10 to 15 minute job. Use a large blanket or tarp under the step area before doing anything as it is very easy to drop a small shaft spacer or other parts when removing the step motor. Makes it easy to find the dropped part. Last time I replaced the motor I was parked in the campground across the highway from Mesa Verde Nat Park entrance.

Doing that bought us a couple of months this year, but we would up replacing the motor anyway. It's sort of interesting that we never replaced the one on our Winnie; it just soldiered on without any attention. Maybe they made them better in '96 than they did in '06.

Yes they did. Never had a step problem with my old '99 Winnebago adventurer for 8 years. Some Marketing Genius thought "hey we aren't selling any step motors lets redesign the motor so we can sell more".
