I have had my fan gearbox replaced once because of it leaking and then a year later they said that it was leaking again. But the leak was small and it was more just seeping out somewhere. I did some checking and read about the vent on top and installed one. This seems to have helped. I may look replacing the seals. Thanks for the info.

I started the process of changing the gear box oil. I removed the bottom pan for easier access to the gear box. The gear box was covered in oily dirt, but to my surprise, it was not leaking at the shaft seal. I am assuming it’s leaking from the top plug/ vent. Today I crawl under and remove all the gunk on the gear box so I can service it. I could not locate a side plug, unless it’s covered in gunk. My manual calls for 1 qt. Of 75/90 synthetic.

Well that was fun. Drain plug was easy but the side plug was frozen and I could not turn it without stripping the Allen wrench and I tried it with a 16” pipe. I could not get my good Allen socket in the space so then tried the large cap on top…nope also stuck with thread locker. The vent plug came easily so drained the box, and pumped new oil in through the the small hole the vent plug left. Only took me two hours
My Powerglide manual said 24 oz. but in another part stated 1 qt. So that’s what I put in, 24 oz. I drained a little more than that out so chances are it was over filled from factory. Probably why the gearbox puked out some of the oil.

I know the service manual states change at 10000 miles and I will be following that schedule. Such a small gear box with only 24 oz. of oil needs to be followed.

Surprisingly, the oil was pretty clean.

Our manual for a 2014 Allegro Bus states every 2 years or 20,000 miles. Also, they state only Synthetic 75w90.

"6) Total fluid capacity is 24oz. Use only synthetic 75W90 oil. Change at 20K miles or every 2 years whichever occurs first."

DRM901, Well I stand corrected, I somehow came up with 10000 miles somewhere. Looked at the manual again today and and sure enough 20K. When I dropped the oil with just over 20K it was Black. Happy I did the service when I did. Also if you look at the MFG, Curtis Machine web site under the model gearbox 412M it states to also be sure it has a High Pressure additive in the synthetic oil. I think I will stay with the 20K over the 2 year, that area is a Bear to work in.

I had missed that this needs to be done every 2 years, so I'm getting ready to do it for the first time, for me. We just got the MH a year ago, and if I didn't get documentation showing maintenance was done I've been doing it so I now have a baseline.

This week.

Don’t know if it’s the same gearbox, mine is on the side midway, facing the engine. I could not get it out and ended up pumping oil thru the top when I removed the vent plug.

fan gearbox

ok got the fill plug loose using the hex bit an extension and a Snap on 1/2 torque wrench actually was easy. Now its on to the drain plug after dinner. has anyone tried an impact on these? Just curious.

While I had mine out I measured the amount that came out which was 24 oz. and then refilled it with 24 oz. as per the manual. I did notice that while I had the side plug out the required amount of 24 oz. was coming out of the side plug before the whole amount was installed. I just tilted the box on its side to allow the whole amount to be installed. I would feel safe filling from the top and not the side after that
