Tiffin Warranty and Support - good experience

Lots of folks ask about their experience with Tiffin now that the company was sold to Thor. I had reservations, because subsequent posts seemed to deliver the message that warranty approval was no longer the Bob said fix it standard that Tiffin has long had a reputation for delivering satisfaction.

We ordered our Breeze over the Hollidays of 2019 and it was built just prior to the Covid Factory shutdown in March of 2020. Rosebud sat on the Yellow Brick Road waiting dampers for the front suspension that were out of stock when she was built. We got notice that she was at the dealer and ready for pickup in April.

Because there were Covid shutdowns all across the nation, we chose to pay for the coach and bring her home immediately, rather than stick around and make a visit to Red Bay for corrections and upgrades. We used the local Tiffin expert who now runs a shop in Jackson, CA for service, repairs and warranty work.

Since we were concerned about getting warranty work done, we documented a list of issues, notified Tiffin Customer support and began working on resolving what could be ticked off the list.

One item persisted. The driver's side slide would not extend without a big guy pushing on it to get it moving. New solenoids were no help and troubleshooting turned up no solution. HWH recommended having a local shop measure the output pressure of the hydraulic pump. No shop in the area had such a gage or experience doing that check.

After talking to Tiffin customer tech support, it was clear that HWH was the right resource to do the work. To get the work covered by warranty, required Bob's approval. Yes, the same process as pre-Thor purchase. I left a message for Bob and he called me back. Yes, have HWH call him for a charge number. So we set up an appointment at HWH to repair the slide.

It was a long trip for us, from California to Iowa, but now the slide goes in and out as required. HWH had never seen this fault and needed engineering analysis to define the required repair. We were well treated and appreciate the support from both Tiffin and HWH.

Note - we had a ground wire come off the DCD driver board and we lost all the slides, mirror adjust, cameras, water pump and GPS. We could drive by using the dash switch that turns on the GPS, radio, and cameras when the ignition is off. Redundant systems are nice. Spider and Tiffin tech support guided us through the troubleshooting and the forum posts here reinforced that most electronic issues were ground fault related. A big thank you to all the players that got us through this trip.

For those of you who expect perfection, do not buy any RV. Things will break. It is the support structures that will see you through, but you have to be part of the process and be willing to go to where the resource you need is located.

Poor customer service at Martin Hveem in Redding.

While I never had a bad warranty experience with my new RED 340 I must admit to being disappointed with the quality of construction. All of my problems were due to a lack of care when assembling the coach and most of the problems I fixed myself as I have years of experience with RV systems and the factory was over 1,000 miles from home. I wrote to Bob Tiffin and he called me which I greatly appreciated. During my first year of ownership I twice diverted my destinations to visit RED Bay for warranty work taking about two weeks each visit. Even today I still find sloppy work hidden by various items. Nevertheless the factory warranty service and phone support have been first rate.

I couldn't have said it better.

JL - I can't find it in my notes, but I thought Martin Hveem was the renovation specialist that Bob uses for his vintage car restorations and is not really a motorhome shop. However, it was my understanding that they had bailed a few folks out who experienced system failures on the road. So, while all companies should have good customer service, they might still be honing their RV customer service skills. Renovations are a bit different world than repairs and maintenance.

Thanks for posting your experience. It might well save some folks from some discontent. Pat

Yes there is. The schedule for my RED 340 was included with the supplied documentation. You may be able to get what you need from Red Bay or perhaps from someone who visits this site.

If you go to Tiffin's site you will find it. See this link. It is page 100 of your manual. It was too large for me to upload to this site.

My warranty experience has been good. Most of the techs in the shop really care about their craftsmanship.

I just returned from Winfield where they had to re-repair something they did back in November. The lead tech was very upset that one of his people had done such bad work (they sprayed over vinyl laminate board without prepping it so the paint literally started peeling off in huge chunks). Doug who worked on my RV said he works like it was his own. I have to say he did a good job and really cared about what had his name on it.

As for the quality of the RV, it is probably good compared to others. My biggest complaint is that it is built with a land home mentality rather than an aircraft mentality. What does that mean? It means things are oversized, bulky and made with 1x2 wood instead of thinking light and durable.

I did pick the staff's brains a bit while there. It seems that about a year ago Thor laid off their Quality control guy who had been topnotch in keeping quality standards up. Thor also laid off many of the duplicated staff.

I asked why one of the Tiffin family members didn't keep the busness in the family. Most of the staff were very closed lip about it but one or two leaked a comment that the Tiffin sons don't get along very well. Not sure what that means but I can guess.
