Togwotee pass to get to Dubois WY

I am leaving to go on a trip soon through Utah from cali to go to Yellowstone. We found a KOA in Dubois Wyoming. To get there from our stop in Utah we drive the 287 over this togwotee pass. We own a 22 Phaeton 37 BH and towing a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Anyone taken this route and stayed at the wind river KOA?

I would hardly call it a pass. It's more like just a drive in the mountains that gets up to 9500' elevation. I've traveled it in the winter when snowmobiling at Togwotee Mountain Lodge 40 years ago when there were no defined trails. Also went over it a few times in our motorhome in the summer on our way through Jackson to Victor, ID. It's an easy pleasant and picturesque drive with some great views when going west.

Edit: If you are in Utah, you don't have to go over Togwotee to get to Yellowstone?????

Hi Crasher. Thanks for the response. We are road-tripping with some friends and we decided to stay a couple days in wind river so we could visit Jackson hole on our way. Wife booked the trip I’m just the driver. Lol.

The wind River along Hwy 26 SE of Dubois about 30 miles has some great views. The Wind River is flowing east, however, while traveling west, you have the feeling that you are driving down hill and the river seems to be flowing uphill. We even had one guy convinced that it was the only place in the world that water flowed uphill due to a reverse gravity zone.

Edit: Be aware that if you enter WY via Hwy 26 from the west, it has a 10% grade that can turn your knuckles white if the motorhome gets away from you.

Hi Crasher. Appreciate your message. We will be coming from Bear Lake in Utah up the 89 to what the map says we make a right onto the 26 @ Alpine onto Jackson and then to the 287 to Dubois. Will I be hitting that grade?

I'm not Crasher, but I don't think your stated route will encounter the steep grade he mentioned. That steep grade is on route 22 between Jackson WY and Victor, ID.

When we visited the area in 2017 we stayed at Longhorn RV ranch in Dubois and traveled the pass twice in our coach, as mentioned above it is not much of a pass, just a scenic drive in the mountains with a number of scenic pull outs.

What Marc said. The steep grade is on WY 22 and not 26. You will be fine on your stated route.

I’ve stayed a couple times at the Dubois KOA. I won’t again. While the facilities are okay, it’s very dusty. The owner has a tendency to zip around on his golf cart, which exacerbates the problem. Also, the mosquitoes can be bad if you’re near the river. I believe there’s better places to stay in the area.

Any suggestions where else to stay?

We mostly enjoyed Long Horn RV ranch, which is on the river when we were there in 2017, only issue was the youngsters working in the office that acted like we were interrupting their important time with their cell phone social life when we wanted to do stuff like check in, check out, give them money, etc. (went in the office 3 times during our stay and all 3 times it was this way). Attached is a photo of our site there
