02 Bounder 39R slide maintenance

My driver's side slide does not make the initial movement to lift up and slide in. Having read many posts about replacing a weak motor, I did so. Didn't make any difference, $892 later.

So I started scraping the old grease off the rail (similar to rack and pinion). I removed the outer four wheels one at a time. Amazing how much crud from over the years. The outer four wheels are attached with independent bolts. I am moving on to the inner wheels, except they are supported by a single bolt and the gear. If I remove the bolt, will I be able to get it back in?

Has anyone accomplished this cleaning?

I had a slide do the same thing it was old batteries showing good voltage but no capacity. Changed battery bank no problem since.

By far, the hardest task the motor faces is lifting the inner edge of the slide-out up when first retracting. The design is literally a nylon sled runner on dry carpet, rather than using actual bearing surfaces. This causes a great deal of friction in addition to requiring lift energy. Unfortunately, there's really nothing that can be done here, because a redesign would involve the slide being physically removed, and that's a whole other topic completely. And lubrication is not going to help here because the nylon will just "wipe itself off" on the carpet, potentially creating dark stains on the carpet.
(NOTE: This is where the Service Bulletin comes into play providing a fix for this area that 2008 Bounder may not have known about at the time of his writing. - c92vette)

So I am not the only person with this situation. Fleetwood denies the problem as they didn't get sufficient complaints to create a service bulletin. SBA0267 perfectly describes the problem and is referred to in the above quote, but, only applies to 2005-2007 model 35E.

The person I quoted above replaced all of the plastic wheels with steel bearings. I see a direction to go.

Tha_Rooster: I have ~14 volts and 10 gauge wires to the motor. I have fully charged batteries connected to shore power, and the engine is running.
