1989 southwind..454 WONT start. PLEASE HELP

I have a 1989 southwind with a 454. I replaced the battery and the whole distributor except for the shaft that extends into the engine. It has fresh fuel. iI dont think its getting a spark at the sparkplug end of the wires. The engine turns over very strong. The perplexing part is that it started fine a week ago. Im open for any and all suggestion...PLEASE HELP

Have you tried to spray starting fluid in it to see if it will run

Thanks. I will try that tomorrow morning as my rig is located 45 min from me. I spent the MAJORITY of today putting on a new alternator and on the distributor. I will be back at it early in the morning...it was well over 90 degrees here in Philly

Yep, try the starting fluid first. If it won't light off with that then you probably have no spark. Pull the dist cap off and then crank the engine to make sure the rotor is turning. If it turns with the engine, then it is either the ignition module, coil or wiring to the distributor. Can you check for voltage at the distributor connection? If the rotor doesn't turn then the internal shaft is broken (very unusual) or your timing chain is broken (also unusual) or the upper timing gear has sheared off its nylon teeth (common). The camshaft drives the distributor, so if the cam isn't turning, neither will the distributor.

You mentioned replacing the distributor but it wasn't clear if the replacement was before or after it failed to start.

UPDATE!! My Southwind is up and running. It has a fresh tune up, fluids, etc etc. I'm in the process of updating carpets and pergo flooring and doing everything else that comes with owning a rv. Thanks to this forum for input and so much encouragement.

The only problem was that it hadn't ran in about 2 yrs and it needed a tune up in the worst way. After replacing the whole distributor, fuel filters, batteries and some minor things, she starts and runs just fine. Only 44k on the odometer and all systems operate just fine.

Today I painted the counter tops. I got rid of that HORRIBLE pink color. I'm putting down Pergo flooring in kitchen area next week. I'll try to post before and after pictures

Looks like a great save on an older MH. Given the age and low mileage, it probably sat for a lot of it's life so don't forget to check the date codes on your tires. Use "search" to find lots of information about replacing old tires.
