1993 Bounder fuel problem

Hello all,

I have a 1993 Bounder 460 (Ford) 38'. It has been sitting over the winter and I went to start it up (never had a problem before) and it won't start. I did start the onan 7000 generator and it runs fine (don't know if that makes a difference). I tried to listen for the fuel pump at the gas fill area with cap off, but read that sometimes you won't hear it (I didn't hear anything). I also tried to find a fuse for the fuel pump/relay and could not find one. I also could not locate the fuel pump relay.

Anyway, I would appreciate any ideas at all. If anyone knows if there is a fuel pump fuse, or where the fuel pump relay may be, or where the fuel filter is located, or if there is something else I should be checking. I don't really want to drop the tank, filled it up all the way before I parked it.
thanks in advance for any help.
Bob

The generator running tells you there is at least 1/4 tank of fuel available. Genny has it's own fuel pump so no help on chassis fuel pump diagnosis.

The fuse and the relay for the fuel pump is in a power distribution box out front behind the hatch on the driver's side. It is a black plastic box, identified on it's lid as power distribution. Often up high, crouch down and look up. Relay #2, 2nd from the bottom is the fuel pump relay. Swap it with relay #3, which is horn relay. If fuel pump works, get new relay. Fuse #18 is fuel pump fuse, check it.

Best way to hear fuel pump run is be in quiet area, remove fuel cap and have helper turn ignition to "run" without cranking. Listen at fill pipe for motor noise for 2 seconds.

Lastly, test fuel pressure. Major auto parts stores will loan tools on deposit, at no cost. There is a pressure test point on the fuel rail, top of engine, under doghouse cover.

Forgot the fuel filter location. Again the genny has it's own filter. The chassis fuel filter is inside the left hand frame rail about even with the tail end of the transmission. It requires a release tool that you should have onboard from now on. There is no other way to change the filter without a tool, it's a must.

Thanks for the pic of the filter, don't suppose you know the part number by chance. I tried to read it but couldn't make it out completely. But thanks again.

Fuel filter part number will vary by brand that your parts store carry's. Here's a couple you might find;

Wix #33296
Fram #G3850
Hastings / Baldwin #GF247
Motorcraft #FG872

I went out to look at the things you mentioned in your post. Mine is not set up the same. I uploaded a few pics to show. I did see two relays (I think) but they are near the oil dipstick. If you get a chance to look let me know what you think. Thanks again.

Wrong box. That is the battery control center. You are after a smaller black plastic box. Identified as "Power Distribution" on box cover. Here's some pictures. Note the open box pic has one broken relay and 2 empty relay sockets. Yours should have 3 or 4 relays in use.

At a loss

I really appreciate all the help you have given me, and I'm feeling a little dumb right now. I cannot find the power distribution box anywhere up front. I looked all around the battery control box, up to the bottom of the dashboard, I can't see it anywhere. You mentioned it is under the "hatch," I am assuming that is the "hood," or am I wrong.

thanks again

I wouldn't feel dumb. Fleetwood patched all this together from what Ford provided.

My Bounder is a 1996, so may be located differently from your 1993. Your's and mine do use the same box though. The box tends to be mounted up high, behind the front hatch or hood. Think they are trying to keep it drier. It is black, and it's dark up there, but gotta be somewhere close. Ford provided the ready made wire harness and it's only so long. Here's a picture of mine. Happens to be next to the battery control center you found. Good luck.

You're getting some awesome help from code2e!! Once piece of information I recommend is checking that valve on the Fuel Rail for pressure! It's easy..valve is exactly like one you'd find on a Car/Bike tire, unscrew cap (if on) and use a pen or similar item to "push" valve pin down while cranking. IT MAY or WILL SPRAY SOME FUEL! Have someone turn ignition key while you use a shop towel placed around this Schrader Valve while testing. If you spray fuel, good sign you have a working Fuel Pump/Fuel Pressure. Post results.

So... I've discovered that my rv is titled in 1993, but the f53 frame is a 92. I do not have a power distribution box like the one shown above. I found my fuel relay, but do not think there is a fuse. I have done tons of research trying to figure this out. I ordered a fuel relay, it should be here in a few days, hopefully that will fix the problem.

It's just so strange though, I shut it off, running fine, tried to start in about a month later, nothing. I'll post if this fixes the problem.

Thanks to everyone who helped me out!

Fuel Pressure?

Did you make sure you have fuel pressure? Get a simple gage and turn the ignition. If it reads zero, you’ll need a fuel pump.

Telling you...buy one of these from Harbor Freight!
https://www.harborfreight.com/fuel-i...ter-58760.html
or from Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/BETOOLL-0-140...jaz10cnVl&th=1
(if Amazon link doesn't work - just enter "Fuel Pressure Test Kit" in Amazon search box.. about $30-$35)

You should be around 30psi-40psi (in that range)...don't know exact. Test will take you 5 minutes!

Good luck.
