Here's item number 2. The cabinet under the pantry (washer/dryer cab?). We noticed odors coming from the area between the fridge and the water closet. We just tracked it down to the top shelf of the lower pantry cabinet. It has the same smell as the black tank. I noticed an opening at the rear right top inside corner that seems to go into the wall. Not only do I wonder why there would be any opening there, I wonder why the blank tank smell would be in the wall. There is a vent for the tank, and it has one of the turn in the wind and create a negative pressure at the vent hole things on it. Looking underneath, in the basement, there doesn't appear to be any leak, but as others have noticed, it's not like there is an access panel there.

Do I need to pull the commode?

Are you sure it's the black tank you are smelling? It's not unusual for the gray tank to smell worse than the black. I suspect the smell is coming from the WD drain. Is there water in the trap? There also may be a stub vent in that compartment that has malfunctioned. There should be one under the sink too, so you can look and see what you are looking for.

We don't have a WD, and there doesn't look to be hookups in the cabinet. Would there still be a stub vent there?

Sorry, I didn't notice the question mark in your reference to a washer/dryer cabinet. What made you think it was a WD cabinet?

There is an external vent for the dryer on the exterior wall adjecent to the cabinet. Plus it looked like many other makes and models combo unit cabinets.

I suspect there are hookups (maybe down inside that opening you mentioned) and the drain has gone dry. The gray tank smell will come back up the drain if you don't keep water in the trap.

Once you find it, there is a pipe in that wall, and you should take a cap of the same size and cover it if it's open. Don't glue the cap on; just push it down enough so it won't come off. You can then wrap that seam with black electrical tape and that should stop the smell. Or you can get a combo washer/dryer and hook up to the plumbing and then you won’t have to go to the laundry mat any more.
